Rebuilding a small piece of the forest floor
Amy Tuininga, John Dighton and Dennis Gray combined three litter types, two watering regimes, burned and unburned material, and three sampling dates in a greenhouse experiment published in 2002. Root assays measured nitrogen and phosphorus uptake and used rubidium as an analog for potassium. Did burning make nutrients available? Tuininga, Dighton and Gray (2002).
Water and elapsed time changed the answer
Across the short experiment, neither burning nor litter type produced an overall uptake effect. Greater watering made phosphorus less available and potassium more available. Nitrogen and potassium were most available immediately after treatment, whereas phosphorus became available only after six weeks. Nutrients released from organic material did not all reach roots on the same schedule. Tuininga, Dighton and Gray (2002).
A limit to the fertilizer analogy
The authors proposed water and timing as important influences worth examining in mature forests. That extension remained a hypothesis. The seedling experiment did not establish an immediate fertilizer effect in mature woodland. Tuininga, Dighton and Gray (2002).
