Gentian: the same mowing can help or harm

A study of Pine Barrens gentian tested why management could revive a rare plant in one season and threaten it in another. Timing, rather than the mere presence of disturbance, was central to the result.

An open-habitat plant faces two kinds of pressure

In their 2019 paper, Ryan Rebozo, Lena Struwe and Walter Bien describe a fall-flowering perennial threatened by both fire suppression and growing-season mowing. They compared managed and unmanaged populations using repeated measurements of density, life stage, mortality and reproduction. Before spring growth was different from during growth

Managed populations had greater density and larger proportions of reproductive plants and seedlings. At previously unmanaged sites, burning or mowing before spring growth increased density, flowering and seed set that year. The authors also warned that applying those treatments during the growing season could have negative effects, particularly beside roads. Rebozo, Struwe and Bien, Castanea 84(2), 238–254 (2019).

Putting the finding into local practice

The Pinelands Alliance’s 2020 account explains how roadside mowing can coincide with autumn flowering and seed production, while changes to water flow and soil chemistry add other pressures. In August 2020, its staff opened canopy and cut shrubs at public and private sites to prepare for prescribed burning, working with NJDEP and New Jersey Conservation Foundation. A management calendar can therefore matter as much as a protected boundary. The reported same-year improvement is encouraging, but it does not establish indefinite recovery or prove that every site should receive the same treatment. Subsequent counts of seedlings, surviving adults and reproduction would test whether an initial response becomes a durable population.
