A regional study found a forest exception inside an otherwise broad climatic pattern.

Counting across a larger landscape

Israel Del Toro’s regional ant survey sampled sixty-seven sites in 2010, pairing open and forested habitats across a broad northeastern climatic and elevation gradient. Published in 2013, the investigation asked how much variation in ant communities could be explained by habitat and climate, rather than simply listing the insects found in one reserve. Temperature outperformed the map coordinates

Open habitats generally held more species than forest habitats, and warmer, lower sites tended to be richer than colder, higher ones. Measured temperature explained richness better than latitude or elevation alone. Yet New Jersey Pine Barrens forests stood out as comparatively ant-rich evergreen sites, interrupting a simple expectation that conifer forest would consistently support fewer species. An exception worth retaining

The regional pattern and the local exception are both part of the result. A regional relationship need not predict every forest correctly. The Pine Barrens observations preserve a local departure from the average. They do not constitute a complete inventory of every ant species in the Pinelands.
