A congregation’s anniversary account links its early preaching circuit to practical household assistance two and a half centuries later.
A congregation older than its sanctuary
The denomination’s 2019 account traces the congregation to Thomas Webb in 1769, Asbury’s 1772 visit and a first building in 1775. Its modern ministries supplied clothing, food and vouchers to wash and dry laundry. Those specific services make the anniversary a record of household needs as well as institutional longevity. The rebuilding year remains unsettled
That account dates rebuilding after fire to 1895. The Historic Trust dates the Watson-designed brick church to 1894 and records later repair of badly deteriorated stained glass. Sources and research limits
The national “third oldest” ranking is not repeated because no comparative evidence was checked. The assistance programs describe the 2019 report, not a verified current service schedule.
