Two sets of aerial photographs and a changing forest

A sampled landscape analysis found fragmentation beneath a relatively stable overall land-cover picture.
Measuring change from above
Researchers compared 1979 and 1991 aerial photographs for seventy-two randomly selected plots in the Mullica River basin. Each covered 225 hectares; together they sampled about eleven percent of the basin. The 2001 report and subsequent 2003 journal article used those photographs to measure land-cover transitions and the changing arrangement of patches. Lathrop and colleagues, landscape report (2001).
Similar totals concealed different arrangements
Overall landscape composition remained relatively similar, yet developed, grassland and barren patches increased in number and area while forest area and patch size declined. The basin could therefore retain a broadly forested appearance while its forest became more fragmented. Total acreage and the continuity of that acreage answered different questions. A qualified assessment of planning
The authors interpreted transitions among management areas as broadly consistent with directing development toward intended locations. That conclusion did not erase the observed fragmentation. Development could follow the intended geography while still changing ecological structure. The estimates came from sampled photo plots, not a complete parcel-by-parcel reconstruction of the basin.
