The mill race’s survival depended on coordinating repairs across adjoining public and private properties.
An industrial channel survived its original work
The Historic Trust dates the raceway to 1723. Its 2002 grant record describes deterioration compounded by unsuitable repairs made along properties bordering the channel. Ownership of separate banks and parcels made the surviving industrial feature a shared preservation problem.
Archaeology before restoration
A matching grant of $29,250 supported a preservation plan and archaeological investigation. Public, private and nonprofit participants connected that work to the town’s historic and cultural revitalization. Sources and research limits
The Trust’s record establishes the planning project and reported condition; it does not publish excavation results or identify which owner made each repair. This entry does not assign individual blame or claim that the funded work restored the entire channel.
