The unidentified ledger linking Moorestown and Lower Bank
Archival mystery reported in 2015 · Current identification unverified
A ledger discovered in an old Lower Bank house records about 265 people from Moorestown, Cinnaminson and other towns. Its missing opening pages left the business behind it unidentified in a 2015 account.
A book without its beginning
In its March 2015 newsletter, page 4, the Historical Society of Moorestown reported receiving a ledger found years earlier in the living-room cupboard of a parent’s old house at Lower Bank. The entries span 1798 to 1802, but the cover and first pages were missing. At the time, volunteers did not know who kept it or what business it documented. The discovery place is not necessarily the original shop’s location.
A network wider than one town
The society counted approximately 265 named people. Many were from Moorestown; others were listed from Cinnaminson, Philadelphia, Mount Holly, Evesham, Burlington, Owl Town and Haddonfield. Identified occupations included carpenters, farmers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights, doctors, shoemakers and weavers. Most transactions were abbreviated “mdse,” leaving the actual goods unclear. The account does not reproduce the full ledger, so a modern reader cannot independently compare its handwriting, columns or names.
The next document to seek
A dated ledger scan, transcription or catalog record could test proposed owners against period tax lists, merchant notices and account books. The society’s 2015 note is evidence that the owner was unknown then; no later resolution was located in this pass. The Historical Society of Moorestown’s current site lists its library and archives at Smith-Cadbury Mansion, but does not advertise this ledger as a display. Its posted archive hours are Tuesday 1–4 p.m. and the second Sunday 1–3 p.m.; check before visiting. The nearby house museum has its own history.
Sources and research limits
- Historical Society of Moorestown, March 2015 newsletter, “18th Century Ledger Book Mystery,” p. 4 — custodian’s account of the artifact, places and unresolved identification.
- New Jersey state locality directory — identifies Lower Bank as part of Washington Township, Burlington County.
- Historical Society of Moorestown, current visitor information — archive location and posted hours.
The ledger itself was not inspected. No original business address is documented, so this story has no pin for the shop. The museum is a research stop, not the find site or a confirmed exhibition location.
