Mohawk: two meanings for the same steering order (1935)

A Senate investigation traced a fatal collision to frozen controls, contradictory steering conventions and inadequate watertight subdivision.
A command reversed
The Mohawk left New York on January 24, 1935, carrying 54 passengers and 110 crew. While overtaking the Norwegian Talisman, her steering controls became increasingly stiff in near-zero temperatures. The crew changed to a wheel operated from the steering-engine room.
The Senate Commerce Committee’s report identified a crucial misunderstanding: the bridge treated telegraph commands as directions for the rudder, while the engineer interpreted them as helm commands. A requested turn was executed in the opposite direction, taking Mohawk across Talisman’s bow.
Why the collision became a sinking
The committee also criticized changing steering arrangements at speed with the ships close together and leaving the engineer alone at the wheel. It concluded that deficient watertight subdivision helped turn the collision into a sinking roughly seventy minutes later.
These are the committee’s explicitly tentative conclusions from its investigation. They explain a chain of failures without pretending to be a criminal verdict against the surviving crew.
