A surviving insulator and an electrical supply catalog show South Jersey glass entering communications infrastructure.
An ordinary object with a place of manufacture
The Smithsonian catalogs an aqua-colored Whitall Tatum glass insulator made in Millville. Classified as a communications insulator, it measures about four inches tall and carries the collection number EM.330865. This small object is direct material evidence of a factory product that belonged to electrical and communications work rather than the table or medicine cabinet. The museum record identifies the maker and place but supplies no manufacturing date or installation history. It cannot establish which telephone line used this particular piece. Selling by the requirements of the line
A Graybar electrical catalog offered Whitall Tatum transparent-glass insulators in different forms. Its No. 1 was advertised for longer toll circuits and difficult insulating conditions; No. 2 was described for shorter circuits. The catalog paired these choices with dimensions, weights and shipping quantities, translating a molded glass shape into a standardized commercial item. Graybar catalog No. 101, p. 54.
A scholarly study hosted by the Society for Historical Archaeology compares company markings with dated advertisements and catalogs. It places insulator production from 1922 and cautions that older reference-book dates for the triangular WT mark are too late.
