Mary Treat’s miniature predators at Vineland
Surviving scientific correspondence
In the 1870s Mary Treat watched tiny animals trapped inside bladderworts and sent her observations from Vineland to Charles Darwin, helping expose how carnivorous plants worked.
A mystery small enough to hold to the light
Treat’s December 2, 1874 letter describes a year of intermittent work on bladderworts. She watched living creatures inside their transparent traps, returning to individual specimens over hours to observe declining movement and eventual breakdown. She distinguished observation from inference: the visible sequence was her evidence for the traps’ role in feeding. The letter survives as a manuscript in the Darwin archive and in a scholarly transcription. Darwin Correspondence Project, letter 9740.
The project’s notes identify her plant under the modern name Utricularia geminiscapa and trace publication of the observations through the New York Tribune, Gardeners’ Chronicle and American Naturalist. This was a local naturalist turning repeated observation into a result that circulated internationally, not merely sending Darwin an interesting specimen.
A result that challenged Darwin
A Cambridge exhibition account explains that Treat later found the trap valve sensitive to contact by insect larvae, contrary to Darwin’s conclusion. Her result arrived too late for his first edition of Insectivorous Plants; Francis Darwin incorporated it into the second edition after his father’s death. Sources and research limits
The letters and published experiments concern scientific observations, not medical uses of plants. The correspondence establishes Vineland as her address but does not locate every collected specimen within a particular bog. A biographical novel featuring Treat should be kept separate from these surviving records.
