Lakewood and Brick: an intentional fire without a named defendant (2021)
Documented history · Source reviewed
Investigators announced an origin and an intentional ignition after a fast-moving fire crossed from woods into developed neighborhoods.
From a tower report to overnight firefighting
At about 1:15 p.m. on March 14, 2021, a Lakewood observation tower reported fire near Cedarbridge Avenue and Airport Road. Crews fought through the night as winds drove it toward Brick. Authorities reported 167 acres burned and control around 1 p.m. the following day.
The consequences included damaged buildings, hundreds of evacuees and a firefighter who suffered cardiac arrest. Three people living in the woods were rescued from advancing flames.
A cause finding is not an identification
On March 19, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced that investigators had located the origin and concluded that someone deliberately set the fire. The release named no accused person.
No later verified charging announcement was located in this research pass. That gap does not overturn the reported origin finding, but it prevents turning an arson determination into an allegation against any particular resident or group.
