Lakehurst’s flying aircraft carrier trials (1932)

In May 1932, pilots hooked small airplanes onto USS Akron while both machines were airborne off New Jersey.

A landing without a runway

The Navy tested Akron’s airborne aircraft-handling trapeze off the New Jersey coast on May 3, 1932. Lieutenants Harrigan and Young used an N2Y trainer and then an XF9C-1 Sparrowhawk to demonstrate the system. Members of the House Committee on Naval Affairs watched another demonstration the following day. These were operational trials of an airship carrying its own airplanes, with Lakehurst as its base. The Naval Aviation Museum’s photographs explain the machinery. A hook above the airplane engaged the suspended trapeze, and the aircraft could be brought inside the airship’s hangar. One image shows Young reaching out to guide a stabilizing arm; another records the pulleys used to move a Sparrowhawk inside. The experiment behind the disaster story

The surviving images preserve a different Lakehurst story from the better-known airship losses: an attempt to extend a scout’s reach by combining two kinds of aircraft. The first demonstration establishes that the mechanism worked; it does not by itself establish the military value or reliability of the larger system.
