Joanne Fantazier: the 1966 Yellow Brook homicide
Homicide under investigation in 1966 · Current official status unverified
Joanne Fantazier of Perth Amboy was found on the frozen surface of Yellow Brook in Colts Neck on February 11, 1966. Contemporary reports document the investigation but do not establish who was responsible.
The discovery at Yellow Brook
The Daily Register of February 14, 1966 reported that a telephone-company worker found Fantazier on the ice of Yellow Brook near a bridge in Colts Neck the preceding Friday. The county physician said she had been struck on the back of the head. He reported a concussion and exposure and believed she may still have been alive when brought to Colts Neck. Monmouth County detectives and state police were investigating her death as a murder.
Perth Amboy was her home community; Colts Neck was the recovery municipality. The newspaper's medical reconstruction did not establish where the first attack occurred or the route to Yellow Brook. A later August 11 Daily Register retrospective again placed her discovery at Yellow Brook, but offered no resolution.
What a possible connection meant in 1966
The February report compared Fantazier's death with that of Mary Ann Klinsky and said authorities had not ruled out a connection. That statement described an investigative possibility at the time. It does not establish a shared perpetrator. An August 25 report said a man arrested in another county killing had not yet been questioned about Fantazier's death; that report does not establish his involvement in her case.
The June 23 Daily Register called Fantazier 18, while the February and August reports gave 17. The contemporaneous sources disagree on her age. No vital record was checked to settle it.
Records still needed
The February 1966 original police and medical records, a verified birth record and a current Monmouth County prosecutor statement could establish a more precise chronology and status. The bridge and brook are not added to the exploration map as a crime-scene stop.
