The final NTSB report reconstructed a gradual descent into Wharton State Forest but could not determine why it began.
A normal assignment, then a changing course
A news helicopter crashed near Hammonton on December 19, 2023, killing its pilot and videographer. They had filmed an assignment near Smithville and were returning to Philadelphia.
The NTSB reconstructed a rightward drift followed by a descent from approximately 1,000 feet. Speed increased as altitude fell. Searchers located the wreckage in Wharton State Forest shortly after midnight.
What the final report could not establish
The examination found no evidence of a pre-impact mechanical failure that would have prevented normal operation, and no evidence of a bird strike. Weather and visibility were good.
The flight path was compatible with incapacitation or sleep, but the medical evidence could not establish that either occurred. The final probable-cause statement consequently leaves the reason for the descent undetermined. A possible explanation considered by investigators should not be promoted into a confirmed medical cause or blame assigned to the crew.
