Fenwick Manor: the workers behind the family name

A preservation study recovers domestic and farm workers inside a house usually remembered for its owners.
The household had more than one kind of work
The preservation plan identifies Rachel and Georgianna Beebe as domestic servants and Harvey Beebe as a farm laborer in 1920. Its 1930 census reconstruction places Reba Hampton in the Darlington household.
A census address is not a floor plan
For 1940, it places the Darlingtons and Chambers family in separate rented households but cannot establish whether they occupied the manor and carriage house. Lucille Rearick appears as the Darlingtons’ maid.
A different working building
Physician James Atkinson and nurse Lucy Atkinson acquired the house in 1953 and adapted it for a medical office. Preservation plan, printed page 24.
Sources and research limits
The plan’s page 24 was inspected, including its census footnotes. The underlying household schedules were not independently inspected; occupations and residence interpretations remain attributed to the study.
