Laboratory cups and planted pots tested whether insect-killing nematodes could reach a hidden pest.
A pest below the vines
Rutgers researchers collected cranberry white grubs from commercial bogs and compared three insect-killing nematode species. Their 2008 paper reported laboratory and greenhouse experiments, including planted cranberry pots containing acidic bog sand. The experiments addressed root-feeding Phyllophaga georgiana larvae, whose underground damage could leave dead patches above ground. Koppenhöfer and colleagues (2008).
Species and experimental setting mattered
Steinernema scarabaei supplied the strongest greenhouse control, ranging from 76 to 100 percent at the tested rate. The other nematodes generally performed less well. In laboratory cups, S. scarabaei worked better against older than younger larvae; that developmental-stage difference did not persist in the greenhouse experiments. A small-container result therefore did not transfer unchanged even to a more realistic pot. Koppenhöfer and colleagues (2008).
Promise was not commercial delivery
The authors described a potential alternative to chemical control, conditional on commercial availability. These trials demonstrated biological performance under specified conditions, not a completed rollout across farms or an assured harvest benefit. Test conditions changed the promising organism’s apparent effectiveness. Koppenhöfer and colleagues (2008).
