What returned to the streams after cranberry farming stopped?

Small stream animals revealed differences that a simple species count could obscure.

Three landscapes, three streambed habitats

An ecological monitoring project compared twelve blackwater streams draining forest, active cranberry bogs and abandoned bogs. Its 2006 report sampled muck, vegetated muck and woody debris within each stream. This design distinguished differences among watersheds from differences among the places where animals lived on a single streambed. Monitoring Pinelands wetlands, Part 5 (2006).

Counting was not the same as identifying

Mean genus richness did not differ significantly among the three stream types, but community composition did. Active-cranberry streams differed from both forest and abandoned-bog streams across the sampled habitats. Mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies occurred more often in forest streams. A historical footprint with several possible mechanisms

The report linked the pattern cautiously to interacting conditions, including oxygen, temperature and woody debris. Its authors proposed that clearing for cranberry agriculture could influence shade, debris and water temperature. They did not isolate one decisive cause or declare abandoned bogs fully restored. The later 2008 journal article concentrated on genus-level assemblages; the earlier report also evaluated families.
