A marked-hatchling experiment followed young snakes beyond their first release into the forest.

Two routes into the same landscape

The Commission’s corn-snake project compared hatchlings released soon after incubation with snakes kept through winter and released the following spring. Tiny identification tags made later recognition possible. This headstarting experiment asked whether additional captive growth could influence survival and development after release. Recaptures were evidence, not a complete census

The 2024 annual report records 225 hatchlings released during 2016–2023: 120 immediate-release and 105 headstarted animals. Researchers recaptured ten from the first group and nineteen from the second. These raw totals cannot be read directly as survival probabilities; an animal might remain alive without entering a trap or being found beneath cover. Commission annual report (2024), pp. 23–24.

A later milestone

During the 2024 nesting season, two headstarted females released in 2019 and 2020 returned to the nest area and were recaptured. Each produced seven eggs. This documented reproduction was a different outcome from merely seeing a released snake again. The report also says the experimental fence had been removed in 2022 and analysis of its detection methods began in 2024. Commission annual report (2024), pp. 23–24.

The annual report dates collaboration to 2016; the project page says 2017. The earlier date is used for the broader research period.
