Chatsworth’s cranberry breeding program reaches beyond the bogs

New cranberry varieties connected a Pinelands research station with growers far beyond New Jersey and with a business based on licensing plants.
More than a bigger berry
Rutgers’ 2008 account describes Nicholi Vorsa’s work at the Marucci Center on Crimson Queen. The objectives included yield, earlier ripening and quicker establishment of newly planted beds. The university reported full production in three to four years rather than the four to five associated with traditional varieties, an economic difference for growers renovating a bog. The same account dates the hybrid’s patent to 2007 and says Rutgers licensed it and companion varieties to more than forty Ocean Spray grower-members. A plant bred at a public university thus entered commerce through propagation rights and royalties, alongside the more familiar physical movement of berries to market. A continuing program rather than one invention
By its 2016 account, Rutgers dated the breeding program’s beginning to 1985 and described six introduced varieties. Crimson Queen, Demoranville and Mullica Queen together occupied nearly 3,800 U.S. acres according to the university’s licensing office. That is a dated adoption estimate from an interested institution, not an independently audited current acreage. Rutgers, cranberry adoption account (2016).
The later report also described a shift toward fruit-rot resistance, with researchers emphasizing disease pressure during hotter summers. The breeding story therefore continued after commercial release. Yield, fruit size, harvest timing and resistance were related objectives, but success on one measure did not guarantee that a variety would be best in every region or growing condition.
