A local experiment tested whether earlier pruning reduced flower buds’ ability to survive cold.
A concern created by the work calendar
New Jersey blueberry pruning could begin in late September, while some southern-hybrid cultivars still retained leaves. Growers worried that early cutting might stimulate growth and reduce cold hardiness. USDA scientist Mark Ehlenfeldt, based at Chatsworth, investigated the concern with statistician Bryan Vinyard instead of assuming that a visible difference in autumn foliage predicted winter injury. Two cultivars and two years
The experiment compared Jersey, a northern highbush cultivar, with Legacy, which has southern highbush ancestry. Researchers subjected shoots to controlled freezing and thawing and assessed flower-bud injury. Published in 2015, the study found significant cultivar and year effects but no significant pruning-time effect on bud hardiness under the tested New Jersey conditions. An answer with boundaries
The 2017 USDA account presented the result as evidence that early pruning need not compromise these plants’ cold hardiness. It did not establish that every cultivar, climate or pruning treatment would respond identically. The experiment tied a seasonal labor decision to measurable evidence.
