Decades of individual tracking exposed a hidden stage in an endangered plant’s life.
Returning to the same plants
A study of American chaffseed followed a New Jersey Pine Barrens population from baseline surveys in 1991 through 2020, adding individual plant monitoring in 1999. Tracking identities changed what disappearance meant. An average of about one-fifth of the population was dormant, and most recorded dormancy episodes lasted one to three years. Counting stems could misread the population
A plant absent above ground could reappear later. Size also failed to distinguish all recruits from older individuals because their smaller size ranges overlapped. The researchers therefore warned that short observation periods could confuse dormancy, recruitment and death. A simple annual count could miss the demographic processes that conservation managers most needed to understand. Kelly, Cartica and Van Clef (2022).
A response without a permanent recovery
Dormant-season mowing and prescribed fire improved flowering, stems and survival, but longer-term declines persisted despite intermittent management. The authors proposed that more frequent treatment might be needed, rather than claiming recovery had been secured. Long observation distinguished temporary improvements from the population’s broader trajectory. Kelly, Cartica and Van Clef (2022).
