The old cedar swamps that resisted a simple succession story

Reading the forest through its size classes
A 1999 study examined Atlantic white-cedar stands established before 1930, comparing cedar structure with hardwood recruitment. The older cedar stands showed the signature of largely even-aged trees thinning as they grew. Red maple, black gum, sweetbay and gray birch were present, but their density and share of basal area remained comparatively low. Zampella, Laidig, Lathrop and Bognar (1999).
More maple did not equal imminent replacement
Maple’s relative contribution increased where cedar trees were larger and less densely packed. Yet the distribution of small stems did not establish a rapid transition to hardwood dominance. Cedar and maple did not differ in absolute abundance in the smallest measured diameter class, while cedar was more abundant in the next class. Zampella, Laidig, Lathrop and Bognar (1999).
Succession as a question, not a timetable
The authors concluded that hardwood replacement was not inevitable and, where it occurred, might require centuries while cedar remained prominent in a mixed forest. Size-class patterns challenged an automatic succession sequence, without directly observing the same stands through those centuries. Zampella, Laidig, Lathrop and Bognar (1999).
