Catherine Baker: from Edison to the Metedeconk (1966)

Homicide in contemporary reporting · Present investigative status unverified

Catherine Baker, 16, disappeared on an errand in Edison in March 1966. Her body was found two months later in the south branch of the Metedeconk River in Jackson Township.

A disappearance and a river discovery

The Daily Register of August 11, 1966 reported that Catherine disappeared March 17 on a shopping trip for her parents. Three boys fishing found her body in the south branch of the Metedeconk in Jackson Township on May 15, according to that report. The newspaper said the autopsy found fatal skull injuries. It did not establish whether she had been sexually assaulted.

Edison was the disappearance municipality; Jackson was the recovery municipality. The discovery does not by itself establish where she was attacked, how she reached the river or who was responsible. No private address or approximate riverbank point is mapped as a place to visit.

The date and the alleged connection

The case index that led to this research gives May 14 for the discovery and names a young man questioned months later. The contemporary Daily Register retrospective instead gives May 15. Its article discusses several killings under investigation in Monmouth and Ocean counties, but its suggestion that some might be connected is a reported investigative possibility, not a finding about Baker's killer. The original May discovery reports and investigative files are needed to settle the date and examine any leads. The index's allegations about the person it names should not be treated as a finding of guilt.

Next records to seek

The May 1966 Edison and Ocean County newspaper reports, the death certificate and the original police or prosecutor record could clarify the exact recovery date, last confirmed movements and any later disposition. The August retrospective establishes a contemporaneous report of the case; it cannot establish today's investigative status.
