When stronger weed control cost cranberry yield

A persistent weed becomes an experiment

Field experiments conducted from 2017 through 2022 examined Carolina redroot control in Chatsworth cranberry beds. The 2024 paper compared residual and postemergence treatments, including different sequences and timings, in Ben Lear and Early Black plantings. The question was not simply which treatment removed the most weeds, but which controlled them without sacrificing production. Besançon and Erndwein (2024).

Control and crop response diverged

A single dormant-season napropamide treatment followed by mesotrione increased yield by 38 percent relative to untreated plots. Splitting the napropamide treatment also controlled the weed, but reduced yield by 36 percent and berry weight by 12 percent relative to a single dormant-season application. A visually cleaner bed could thus conceal an unfavorable crop response. Besançon and Erndwein (2024).

Why the trial needed several seasons

The authors found that repeated management over several years was needed for sustained control. Timing, crop injury and persistence mattered alongside weed suppression. These are results from particular experimental treatments and growing conditions, not a universal prediction for every cranberry farm. Besançon and Erndwein (2024).
