The complete Gloucester County Democrat page for December 7, 1882 matches the surviving crop: the Barnsboro column includes John Crane’s recovery, F. S. Parker’s rheumatism, the Madara–Chew–Papple farm transactions, and Aaron Somers’s planned move. These surrounding particulars identify the newspaper and issue, previously unknown in this collection.
The sentence says a rumor circulated on Tuesday evening that Christmas-green gatherers had seen a wild man in Jessup’s woods. With the Thursday issue now identified, that Tuesday was December 5. It dates circulation of the rumor; it does not necessarily date the alleged encounter. The columnist immediately suggested a startled pheasant as the explanation.
