Caleb Brokaw was born Jul 12, 1746 in Somerset County, New Jersey and died May 8, 1814 at Weston, New Jersey at the age of 67. He married Jane Van Nostrand Brokaw (his second cousin) around 1768... Caleb was a farmer and mason and lived in Weston, New Jersey. He served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain Peter Dumont Vroom's Company, Second Regiment of the Somerset County Militia.Show the full recordHide the full recordFull record, about 150 words
In 1780, he received $139 for depreciation of his Continental pay... Caleb Brokaw was buried in an old family cemetery in Hillsborough (later Mansville)... copied the following from his tombstone: 'In memory of Caleb Brokaw, who died May 8, 1814, in the 68th year of his life.'... The site is now covered by a housing development.

Abraham Caleb Brokaw, 2 March 1773 – 23 July 1826. Born Franklin Township, Somerset, New Jersey; died Knox, Ohio; buried Warren Township, Jefferson, Ohio. Father Caleb Brokaw 1746–1814, mother Jane Van Norstrand 1748–1823. Married Maria Polly Stryker 8 January 1792, Raritan, Somerset, New Jersey. Sixteen children, including John Andrew 1804–1893, Elizabeth Polhamus 1809–1854 and Cornelia Stryker 1809–1907.

What we still don't know
- [SHE MARRIED HER SECOND COUSIN, AND THE NAMES CROSS OVER] The memorial says plainly that Caleb married "Jane Van Nostrand Brokaw (his second cousin)" and that she was the daughter of Isaac Brokaw and Antie Van Nostrand. So she was a Brokaw by birth who took her mother's surname as her recorded name, or the compiler has crossed two families. Cousin marriage was ordinary in the closed Dutch congregations of Somerset County, but this needs the Hillsborough or Raritan church registers to untangle.
