What we still don't know

• [WHAT ONE DOCUMENT WOULD GIVE, AND IT IS ONLINE] This archive holds no date, no place and no source for him — only that Carmine was his son. His son's marriage certificate, Kings 1927 no. 3044, names him and his wife with their birthplaces, and it is digitised. That would be the first evidence of where in Italy this family comes from. Finding 160.
• [NARROWED THE SAME DAY — I OVERSTATED THIS] The note above first said this certificate would document Nicola Cacace and Caterina Picone. It already is documented: Carmine's own timeline records that the 1927 marriage record "names his parents as Nicola Cacace and Caterina Picone", and his birthplace of Naples is a sourced fact from his 1927 naturalisation (certificate 142652), with an arrival of 1916 from the 1930 census. What is genuinely new is the certificate NUMBER — 3044 — which the archive did not hold, and the indexing error Voga that hid it. I searched `people.json` for the number, found nothing, and concluded the record was unknown; the record was known and the number was not. Finding 163.
• [NEGATIVE, CONTROLLED] No Nicola or Nicholas Cacace died in New York City between 1862 and 1948, against a control of 93 Cacace deaths in that index. He died elsewhere — in Italy, or after 1948. Finding 160.
• Nicola is known only as a name on his son's marriage record. Carmine's naturalization petition file (certificate 142652, Eastern District of New York, 21 October 1927) should give the exact Italian birthplace and arrival details, which would identify the comune whose civil registers hold Nicola's own marriage and his children's births. Those registers are free on Antenati.
• His grandson's household in 1940 contains a Catherine, and the eldest girl's mangled name may be Nicolina — Italian families named the first daughter for the paternal grandmother and often a child for the grandfather. That is a custom, not a record, but it is consistent with him and Caterina Picone being who the 1927 marriage says they are.
• [LEAD, UNTESTED] A Nicola Cacace and Caterina Picone appear in the civil registers of Lipari, in the Messina province of Sicily, losing two infant daughters both named Luisa, in 1888 and 1889. The pairing of those two names is not common. Against it, Carmine was born at Naples in 1901, which is a different region — though families moved. It is written down because it is the only other Nicola-and-Caterina couple found, and because it would be tested by Carmine's own birth record.
