- [WHAT ONE DOCUMENT WOULD GIVE, AND IT IS ONLINE] Her son Carmine's marriage certificate — Kings 1927, no. 3044, digitised — names her, with her maiden name and birthplace. This archive holds nothing else on her at all. Finding 160.
- [NARROWED THE SAME DAY — I OVERSTATED THIS] The note above first said this certificate would document Nicola Cacace and Caterina Picone. It already is documented: Carmine's own timeline records that the 1927 marriage record "names his parents as Nicola Cacace and Caterina Picone", and his birthplace of Naples is a sourced fact from his 1927 naturalisation (certificate 142652), with an arrival of 1916 from the 1930 census. What is genuinely new is the certificate NUMBER — 3044 — which the archive did not hold, and the indexing error Voga that hid it. I searched `people.json` for the number, found nothing, and concluded the record was unknown; the record was known and the number was not. Finding 163.
- [THREE CANDIDATES, UNDECIDABLE, NOTHING ATTACHED] She would have died under Cacace, and the New York death index holds three: Catharine, 55 y, 6 July 1918, Kings, no. 14607; Catharine, 42 y, 27 September 1920, Kings, no. 19351; Catherina, 73 y, 24 May 1947, Kings, no. 11028 — implying births about 1863, 1878 and 1874. A woman whose son was born in 1901 could be any of them. Three candidates is a shortlist, not a finding, and none has been attached. What would cut it down is her husband's name or her own maiden name, and the 1927 marriage certificate gives both. Finding 160.
- Her great-granddaughter Catherine Cacace, born about 1930, is very probably named for her, by the ordinary Italian custom. A custom is not a record and it is a small independent sign that the 1927 marriage names the right woman.
- [LEAD, UNTESTED] A Nicola Cacace and Caterina Picone appear in the civil registers of Lipari, in the Messina province of Sicily, losing two infant daughters both named Luisa, in 1888 and 1889. The pairing of those two names is not common. Against it, Carmine was born at Naples in 1901, which is a different region — though families moved. It is written down because it is the only other Nicola-and-Caterina couple found, and because it would be tested by Carmine's own birth record.
