Geolocation log: entries o-z and 0-9 (batch entries-o-z.json)

153 entries processed (every file in pinebarrens/entry/ whose name begins with o-z or a digit). Counts by precision:

  • site: 31
  • locality: 37
  • area: 41
  • none: 44

Sources used

  • USGS GNIS domestic-names extract for New Jersey (local scratchpad file gaz/Text/DomesticNames_NJ.txt), for historical Pine Barrens place names, townships, and county-level features.
  • NJPB community map data (njpb-locations.json, 105 named Pines localities; njpb-poi.json, 10 points of interest), for well-known Pines hamlet/landmark names (Ong’s Hat, Sim Place, Sooy Place, Quaker Bridge, Mount Misery, Pasadena, Elm, Warren Grove, Whitesbog Village, Weymouth Furnace, Fox Chase-adjacent points, Carranza Memorial, Batsto, etc.).
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim, used for roads, cemeteries, churches, and named crossroads not in the above two sources (Hampton Gate, Mountain View/Wayne, Patty Bowker Road, Pemberton UMC, White Horse Pike/Waterford, Chester Rural Cemetery PA, Atsion Lake, Cedar Bridge/Barnegat, Sooy Place Road).
  • Note: Nominatim rate-limited (HTTP 429) for a stretch of the session after an early burst of queries; several additional lookups (Bass River State Forest by name, Bayside NJ, Tea Time Hill, exact bridge/tavern addresses) could not be completed before the task’s time budget closed. Those entries were given wider “area” precision using the nearest independently-verified locality, with a note flagging the approximation, rather than left unplaced where a defensible general area existed — and left as “none” where no defensible area existed (e.g., Bayside, Wildwood, William Allen School’s exact building).

Entries left unplaced (“none”) and why

Most are broad regional science/monitoring studies whose “Place” field is a multi-county zone with no named site (e.g. “New Jersey Pinelands,” “Southern New Jersey Pinelands,” “Mullica River watershed,” two unnamed streamside/pond study sites) — 27 of the 44 “none” entries are this type (ant survey, gentian study, treefrog pond-drying, pine-snake hibernacula/sores studies, the nine pinelands-* monitoring/experiment entries, pine-plains dwarf-forest research, pitcher-mosquito lab study, southern pine beetle, spongy moth carbon experiment, swamp-pink water-level study, tiger salamander pond return, wild-bee pollination study, Wharton’s 1891 water-supply proposal, the jetport-preservation history). Others: editorial/planning pages with no place at all (table-of-contents, toc, unidentified-2013, untitled-page, untitled-page-2 — the last describes a New Jersey motorcycle ad in Oakland, Bergen County, outside the Pine Barrens); resources (a link list); para-dice-club (a California lead unconnected to the Pines); seaview-county-proposed-1873 (no surviving description of the proposed county); three cases where the entry gives a real but under-resolved location this session couldn’t independently confirm without inventing a coordinate — roberts-roy-1931 (Bayside, Cumberland/Salem County — not found in USGS GNIS NJ extract, and Nominatim was rate-limited when checked), s-5-submarine-rescue-1920 and u-869-wreck-identification-1997 and texas-tower-four-structural-inquiry-1961 (offshore incidents with no coordinate or nearer place given in the source text), sammy-buck-giberson-fiddle-legend (explicitly “no specific setting confirmed”), wildwood-flying-saucer-reports-1947 (Wildwood itself is real but wasn’t in either gazetteer and Nominatim was down when checked — better to leave unplaced than approximate a town), and william-allen-school-segregation-expansion (Burlington City is named but the school building’s address wasn’t independently confirmed).

Notable problems / likely errors worth flagging in the entries themselves

  • peggy-clevenger-witch-of-the-pines: pin is a calculated midpoint between GNIS Mount Misery and the Barnegat Township “Cedar Bridge” locality, per the entry’s own “halfway between Mount Misery and Cedar Bridge” wording — flagged as an interpolation, not a surveyed point. Worth double-checking that the Barnegat Cedar Bridge (not the Brick Township one, also returned by Nominatim) is the one meant; the Barnegat one sits on old Route 72/Stage Road, consistent with the Pasadena/Mount Misery area, so it was preferred.
  • paisley-buyers-promises-tax-bills: “Paisley” is not a resolvable name in USGS GNIS or the NJPB map; pinned at Tabernacle center only because the entry itself glosses Paisley as “present-day Tabernacle.”
  • 1992-bags: the entry names two recovery sites (Butler Place rest area on Route 72, and Stafford Forge rest area on the Garden State Parkway) plus a third place (Red Lion maintenance yard) where remains were actually discovered after being collected elsewhere — worth adding all three to the site if the map format is later extended to multiple points per entry.
  • tote-pin-man-1928: pinned broadly at Ewing Township center; the entry gives a precise detail (“about 220 feet from a road, on land of the New Jersey State School for the Deaf”) that would support a “site” pin if the school’s historic footprint were geocoded — a good candidate for follow-up.
  • quicklime-body-1935 and paul-david-f-1920: both name specific but ungazetteered road/crossway names near Chatsworth/Tabernacle (“Hundred Dollar Bridge Road,” “Iricks Crossway”); both would upgrade from “area” to “site” with a follow-up local-road search (county tax maps, historical THS road records) rather than Nominatim, which returned nothing for either.
  • society-max-bayonne-bull: multiple witnesses place the capture at “Ninth Street and the Boulevard” in Bayonne’s Bergen Point section; this is a real, mappable street intersection that a follow-up OSM query (once rate-limiting clears) should resolve to a “site” pin.
  • Nominatim rate-limiting: the session hit persistent HTTP 429 responses after roughly 20 queries, which blocked several planned lookups (Bass River State Forest, Bayside NJ, Wildwood, exact intersections). A follow-up pass with slower pacing (one query per several seconds, spread across a longer session) would let several “area” pins here become “site,” and let a few “none” entries (Bayside, Wildwood) become “locality.”

Validation (root fact-check)

Independent re-check, 2026-09-11. All 31 "site" records were opened against their entry page and tested against the local USGS GNIS New Jersey extract, the staged njpb-locations.json / njpb-poi.json, and (where it could be reached) OpenStreetMap Nominatim. A sample of 24 locality/area records was also checked, favouring the ones flagged above. Nominatim was still returning HTTP 429 for most of this pass; queries that mattered were retried at 45-second spacing, and where a lookup still failed the record was widened rather than guessed.

Headline result: of 31 site pins, 7 survive as sites. 24 were downgraded. The recurring fault was pinning a named building, road, grove, bog, tract or crossing at the gazetteer point of the nearest settlement and then calling the result a site. In several of those records the note already admitted the pin was the village centre, which by itself should have precluded "site".

Verified, kept as site (7)

  • ogden-joshua-1879 — verified. Nominatim relation 7998639 (Chester Rural Cemetery) returns 39.860702, -75.367282, matching exactly. Note strengthened: the burial identification is the entry’s own “probable, not certain”, and this is a Pennsylvania cemetery, not the Ship Creek discovery site.
  • pemberton-methodist-laundry-ministry — verified. Nominatim way 425957477 (Pemberton UMC, 45 Hanover Street) returns 39.9741195, -74.6817546, matching exactly.
  • sim-place-vanished-cranberry-village — verified against GNIS 880615; the gazetteer point falls in the northeast corner of Bass River Township on the Ocean County line, as the entry says.
  • smithville-workers-wages-housing — verified against GNIS 880667.
  • timbuctoo-community-archaeology — verified against GNIS 881192.
  • weymouth-furnace-paper-mills — verified; NJPB point sits on the furnace ruins, ~180 m from GNIS 881758 (Weymouth).
  • whitesbog-blueberry-domestication-1916 — verified; coordinate moved ~30 m onto GNIS 881802 and basis changed from NJPB to GNIS.

Downgraded from site (24)

Building or structure pinned at a settlement centre: port-republic-swing-bridge-record (bridge → town, ~1 km), roebling-worker-house-relief (101 Second Avenue → village), shinn-samuel-1908 (Mount Holly Cemetery → town centre; the cemetery is not in GNIS), vincentown-grange-meetinghouse, vincentown-library-readers-expansion, sooy-place-pine-tavern (tavern known only from a will and 1850s maps), seabrook-trial-leave-recruitment (Seabrook Farms plant → village), shull-harry-h-captain-1917 (beach cabin → hamlet), perry-joseph-1928 (a spot on Iron Mill Road → the Elm locality).

Tract, grove or linear feature pinned as a point: silas-little-experimental-forest-1933 (research tract inside Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, pinned on New Lisbon village), slocum-joseph-1959 (a marsh in a wildlife management area of several thousand acres; the search alone covered ten by four miles), rankokus-powhatan-cultural-center (a ~350-acre reservation; GNIS classes it “Civil”, an area), tabernacle-harvest-home (the Fox Chase grove is not mapped), woodbine-refugee-settlement-1891 (a 5,300-acre planned settlement), patty-bowker-road-name and tabernacle-bicentennial-athletic-day (a road several miles long, and an unmapped field named after it), pioneer-sportsmen-moving-clubhouse and sandy-ridge-cranberry-housing (GNIS 880261 “Sandy Ridge” is classed as a Ridge — a linear landform, not a settlement point; the entry also states no ruin-location directions are supplied).

Other: white-stag-of-shamong-legend (an undated legend from a single 2009 blog post has no site), weather-4-20-2015 (the entry’s own coordinate is rounded to two decimals, ≈1 km, so a site pin overstates it), passaic-1887 (depot not located; also moved onto GNIS 878616, ~440 m).

Coordinates corrected

  • shenandoah-storm-breakaway-1924 — the worst error in the batch. Pinned on Lakehurst borough for an event at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, about 5.4 km away. NAS Lakehurst has its own GNIS record (2512311, 40.0311501, -74.3697035) that the earlier pass missed. Moved there; set to area/3000 m, since the mooring mast near Hangar No. 1 is not separately pinned.
  • royal-pine-1930 — pinned on the Pinewald GNIS point, ~1.3 km east of Crystal Lake, though the entry says the hotel extended 240 feet along the lake’s west shore. Moved to GNIS 875760 (Crystal Lake, Ocean County), area/1200 m.
  • r-p-resor-tanker-loss-1942 — pinned at Sandy Hook, roughly 40 km north of Manasquan and on land, for a tanker torpedoed offshore between Barnegat Light and Manasquan. Moved to an offshore point (39.93, -73.95) with a 35 km radius and a note that this is a zone, not the wreck.
  • sharp-anthony-j-1931 — a Bellmawr death pinned at Blackwood, ~8 km away and a different municipality. Moved to GNIS 874654 (Bellmawr).
  • peggy-clevenger-witch-of-the-pines — the calculated midpoint was removed; a midpoint between two gazetteer entries is not evidence. Recentred on Pasadena (which the entry’s own heading names) with an 8 km radius covering both that reading and the “halfway between Mount Misery and Cedar Bridge” wording. Added the caveat the earlier log asked for: the only Cedar Bridge in GNIS is in northern Ocean County, ~25 km away; the Barnegat-area Cedar Bridge intended here is not gazetteered at all.
  • paul-david-f-1920 — a 4 km circle on Tabernacle did not reach the Tabernacle–Chatsworth corridor the clipping describes. Recentred on the midpoint of GNIS Tabernacle and Chatsworth, radius 9 km. “Iricks Crossway” remains unresolvable; it is not in GNIS.
  • theodore-pohlig-1972-murderer, sooy-place-pine-tavern, whitesbog-…, perry-joseph-1928, passaic-1887 — coordinates aligned onto verified GNIS points (30 m–440 m moves) and bases corrected accordingly.

Upgraded

  • wildwood-flying-saucer-reports-1947 — was none on the stated ground that Wildwood “was not in either gazetteer”. It is: GNIS 881829, 38.9917797, -74.8148894. Now locality.
  • roberts-roy-1931 correctly stays none: “Bayside” genuinely returns nothing in the GNIS NJ extract, so the earlier call was right here.

Radii corrected (circle did not contain the described place)

Widened: 1992-bags 1.5→7 km (gazetteered Butlers Place is ~6 km north of Route 72); tote-pin-man-1928 2→5 km (the School for the Deaf grounds are ~3 km southwest of the Ewing point; Katzenbach returned no Nominatim result); society-max-bayonne-bull 2→3.5 km (Ninth Street and the Boulevard is ~2.3 km from Bergen Point); towns-anna-1836-poison-liquor 5→8 km (West Creek is ~6.5 km from Tuckerton); sonnenfeld-todd-1990 5→9 km (Berkeley Township is large and elongated); tuckerton-wireless-neutrality-1914 4→7 km (the station was in Little Egg Harbor, not Tuckerton); woodland-gun-club-dances-membership 2→4 km, plus a note that the pin falls in Woodland Township while the property is placed in Tabernacle; sindia-wreck-1901 1→3 km, plus a note that the pin is on land in the town while the wreck lies offshore. Tightened: powhatan-wreck-1854 8→2 km — the Routes 9 and 561 junction is essentially at the Absecon GNIS point, so an 8 km circle was needlessly vague; note added that the wreck itself was off Long Beach Island.

Checked and left unchanged

1860-peddler-accusation-hampton-gate, 3-murdered-1934, penn-swamp-cedar-deer-experiment, rancocas-village-learning-records, reso-sidney-kidnapped-1992 (basis re-verified: GNIS 878737 New Gretna, coordinate exact), scott-allen-bodine-1954, quicklime-body-1935, paisley-buyers-promises-tax-bills (the Tabernacle gloss is the entry’s own and is the best available; “Paisley” is indeed absent from GNIS), tea-time-hill-turtle-transmitters, pine-island-bobwhite-nesting-trial, sbraccia-galiano-suicide-1934, whiting-station-train-accident-1942, penley-william-k-missing-1958-found-1959, woods-katie-1895-murdered, and the remaining Whiting, Vineland, Medford and Tabernacle locality pins, all of which match their gazetteer sources.

No transposed or sign-flipped coordinates were found; every placed record falls inside a New Jersey / adjacent-Pennsylvania bounding box. The two land-pin-for-a-water-event cases (r-p-resor-tanker-loss-1942, sindia-wreck-1901) are handled above.
