Sources used
- NJPB community map data (
njpb-locations.json, session-provided) — primary source for named vanished-town/hamlet Pines locations (Fox Chase, Hampton Gate, Hampton Furnace, Harrisville, Chatsworth, Cassville, Indian Mills, Leeds Point, Lumberton, Martha Furnace, Mary Ann Forge, Medford, Mount Holly, Mount Misery, Tabernacle, Hammonton, Lakehurst, New Lisbon, Atsion). - USGS GNIS, local NJ domestic-names extract (
gaz/Text/DomesticNames_NJ.txt) — populated places, streams and civil townships (South Park/Paisley, Whitesville, Williamstown, Jericho x2, Gouldtown, Del Haven, Mantua Creek, McDonalds Branch, Deal, Camden, Kearny, North Arlington, Hackensack, Brigantine, Cape May, Millville, Vineland, Cinnaminson, Mount Laurel, Marlton, Burlington, Woodbridge, Long Branch, Asbury Park, Lawnside, Colliers Mills, Bass River, Elsinboro/Evesham/Southampton/Jackson/Galloway/Waterford/Middletown/Berkeley/Pittsgrove/Quinton/West Deptford/Woodland/Fairfield townships, Barnegat Inlet, Gloucester Township, Mays Landing, Pemberton Township, Medford Lakes, Hunterdon County, Greenwich, River Styx, Pinewald). - OpenStreetMap Nominatim (live queries this session, 1 req/sec, descriptive User-Agent) — Jericho Road (Quinton Twp), Six Flags Great Adventure, Wharton State Forest (two records), Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, Medford Farms Volunteer Fire Company, Mount Peace Cemetery, Park View Cemetery at Kirby’s Mill, Protestant Community Church of Medford Lakes.
Nominatim rate-limited (HTTP 429) heavily partway through the session, evidently from concurrent use by parallel research batches on the same IP. After the initial successful batch, repeated retries for ~17 additional queries (Gabreil Daveis Tavern, Woolman Memorial, James Still Office, Knight-Pepper House, Langstaff Mansion, Convention Hall, East River Hotel, Abilene bar/South Street, Red Lion Circle, Crescent Heights Road, Atsion Road, Lost Lane, North Pemberton station, Quinn Brook, St. Mary of the Lakes, Woodbridge Cloverleaf, South Pomona Road) failed. Per the hard rule against inventing coordinates, these were resolved by falling back to the nearest already-sourced locality (township or town centroid) at reduced precision, with a note flagging the fallback — except three cases (jack-the-ripper-nyc, imbo-danielle-petrone-richard-2005-couple, lady-mary-sinking-investigation-2009) where no defensible fallback existed and precision was left “none” instead of guessing.
Entries with precision “none” (11)
- impoundment-fish-land-use-study, kingsnake-wetland-telemetry-2026, kirkwood-cohansey-groundwater-models, mullica-aerial-landscape-change-study, mullica-ghost-forest-study-2021 — regional scientific studies covering the whole Pinelands or a whole river basin; no single site.
- lamhert-sarah-a-1931, notebook-man-1927 — source clippings give no usable place at all.
- mohawk-steering-collision-1935, lady-mary-sinking-investigation-2009 — open-ocean incidents located only as “off the New Jersey coast” or “~65 miles offshore,” too vague to pin defensibly at site/locality/area without inventing an at-sea point.
- jack-the-ripper-nyc — exact address (East River Hotel, Catherine Slip & Water St., Manhattan) is named in the entry, but Nominatim was rate-limited for the whole session after the first batch; left unpinned rather than estimated from memory. Worth a follow-up geocoding pass.
- imbo-danielle-petrone-richard-2005-couple — same rate-limit problem for the South Street, Philadelphia address; also arguably outside the Pine Barrens proper.
Notable problems / discrepancies found
- jericho-salem-county-1875 — the entry’s factbox states “Woods near Jericho, Salem County, New Jersey,” but no place called Jericho exists in Salem County in either the GNIS extract or Nominatim. The only two New Jersey “Jericho” records are in Cumberland County (Stow Creek Township, matching a “Jericho Pond”) and Gloucester County (Woodbury quad). Pinned to the Cumberland County Jericho as the closer match, but this is flagged as a likely county-name error in the source entry, worth checking against the original clipping.
- knopp-solomon-1872 — the entry itself already flags this as uncertain (damaged OCR mentions “Cassville” and possibly conflates two men); pinned to Cassville only as a tentative “area” with a large radius, per the entry’s own caution.
- Several well-known specific buildings named in entries (Gabreil Daveis Tavern, James Still Office, John Woolman Memorial, Langstaff Mansion, Knight-Pepper House, Medford Friends Meeting House, Asbury Park Convention Hall, North Pemberton station, St. Mary of the Lakes/Memorial Hall) could not be geocoded at building precision this session due to Nominatim rate-limiting, and were downgraded to town/township “locality” pins with a note. These are good candidates for a follow-up pass once API access is available.
- Two “Nehrwein” entries (nehrwein-atsion-woman-anna-maria-nehrwein-1887 and nehrwein-maria-kate-1887) describe the same 1887 case at two precision levels — the fuller entry corrects the original “Atsion” framing to the more precise Hampton Gate/NJ Southern Railroad location; the shorter duplicate entry still says “near Atsion/Mount Holly” and was pinned less precisely accordingly.
Validation (root fact-check)
Independent re-check of all 103 records, September 11, 2026. Every "precision": "site" record was
opened against its entry page and checked against the USGS GNIS NJ domestic-names extract, the staged
njpb-locations.json / njpb-poi.json datasets, and OpenStreetMap Nominatim (which had recovered from
the earlier rate-limiting and answered normally on a paced retry).
Totals
| before | after | |
|---|---|---|
| site | 28 | 20 |
| locality | 52 | 55 |
| area | 12 | 20 |
| none | 11 | 8 |
Of the 28 original site pins, 14 survived, 14 were downgraded. Six new site pins were added (five by resolving a named building, one by geocoding an address the entry already gave). Coordinates changed on 15 records. No sign-flipped, transposed, out-of-state or in-open-water-by-mistake coordinates were found, and no record pointed at a same-named town in the wrong county.
Corrected coordinates
- great-atlantic-hurricane-radar-1944, hindenburg-lakehurst-investigation-1937,
lakehurst-aircraft-carrier-tests-1932, los-angeles-mooring-1927 — corrected, 5.3 km each.
All four were pinned to 40.014841/-74.311029, which is the borough of Lakehurst, not the naval air
station where every one of these events happened. GNIS carries
Naval Air Station Lakehurst(feature 2512311, Military) at 40.0311501/-74.3697035. This was the worst error in the batch: four separate “site” pins, all confidently wrong, all pointing at a town centre instead of the airfield. - jackson-forest-nursery-relocation — corrected 11.8 km, downgraded. Was pinned to Colliers Mills as a stand-in because Holmanville was thought absent from the gazetteer. GNIS carries it, spelled Holmansville (feature 877181), at 40.1009478/-74.3179246.
- morris-kevin-galloway-remains — corrected 8.8 km W, from the Galloway Township civil centroid to Pomona (GNIS 879411); the prosecutor’s release names South Pomona Road, which runs from Pomona.
- kane-william-p-1961-suicide — corrected 6.1 km N, from the Southampton Township centroid to Crescent Heights (GNIS 875717), the locality named in the clipping.
- miller-woodburn-murderer-1942 — recentred 4.6 km S and reclassified locality → area. Both circles named in the source are in GNIS (Four Mile Circle 876439, Red Lion 879636); the pin is now the midpoint of the stretch of road between them, radius 7000.
- kirbys-mill-suppliers-machinery — corrected 709 m onto the mill’s own GNIS record (877591). It had been pinned to the adjoining Park View Cemetery.
Upgraded
- kirbys-mill-suppliers-machinery — cemetery stand-in → the mill’s own gazetteer point.
- mount-holly-lyceum-revival — locality → site, 660 m. Nominatim resolves the Burlington County Lyceum of History and Natural Sciences (the Langstaff Mansion) on High Street.
- medford-friends-school-fire-engine — locality → site, 250 m (Main Street Friends Meeting House, South Street, Medford Township).
- morro-castle-fire-1934 — locality → site, 1.3 km (Asbury Park Convention Hall, on the boardwalk; it had been the inland town centroid).
- luciani-arthur-baby-1979 — locality → site. The entry gives 243 Chestnut Street, Mount Holly; Nominatim resolves that house number.
- monkey-long-branch-1952 — locality → site. 225 Atlantic Avenue, Long Branch. OSM carries two points for that number ~170 m apart; the pin is their midpoint and the note says so.
- jack-the-ripper-nyc — none → site. Catherine Slip, Manhattan (40.7094778/-73.9963047). The hotel is long demolished; the pin is the street.
- imbo-danielle-petrone-richard-2005-couple — none → area. Nominatim returns nothing for Abilene (long closed) but resolves the South Street corridor; pinned there with a 2 km radius rather than a doorway.
- lady-mary-sinking-investigation-2009 — none → area. Reversing the earlier call: NTSB MAB-11/01 does give a real reference point, “about 65 miles southeast of Cape May.” Pinned at 38.2161/-73.9955, radius 25000, which is the midpoint between reading 65 miles as statute and as nautical along a 135° bearing. Open ocean — the note says it is not a visitable place.
Downgraded
site → locality: hosea-moore-samuel-prickett (tavern footprint unlocated),
irelan-robert-dean-1979 (a road, not a grave coordinate), joseph-mulliner-pine-robber-1781
(no gallows location recorded), korman-robert-almost-skeletal-man-berkeley-1972 (locality centroid),
mays-landing-excursion-wreck-1880 (trestle not located),
nehrwein-atsion-woman-anna-maria-nehrwein-1887 (locality centroid),
new-lisbon-anderson-williams-1975 and new-lisbon-diabetic-missing-1954 (a 1,896-acre campus),
jackson-forest-nursery-relocation.
site → area: lake-hopatcong-hoppie-serpent-1894 (2000 m; 1894 original never located),
mantua-creek-unidentified-man-1990 (6000 m; the coordinate is the GNIS point for a stream ~30 km long),
mcdonalds-branch-acid-deposition and mcdonalds-branch-water-vapor-tower (4000 m each; whole-basin
studies, and the USGS report never publishes the flux tower’s position).
site → area: mob-murder-1941, which had carried a contradictory 1500 m radius while claiming site
precision. locality → area: miller-woodburn-murderer-1942 (above).
The specific problems the log flagged
- jericho-salem-county-1875 — settled, and the entry was right. The earlier log called the factbox’s
“Salem County” a likely error because GNIS showed Jericho only in Cumberland and Gloucester. It also
carries Jericho Pond (feature 884286) in SALEM County, about 215 m north of the Cumberland-side
settlement: Jericho sits on the county line, and both labels describe the same crossroads. The
“likely county error” flag has been removed and the finding recorded in
note. Precision stayslocality— the 1875 brief says only “woods near Jericho” and names no spot within them. (The Gloucester County Jericho, 37 km north, is not a candidate.) A third Salem County confirmation: the irelan-robert-dean-1979 grave was off Jericho Road in Quinton Township, ~4 km away. - jack-the-ripper-nyc, imbo-danielle-petrone-richard-2005-couple — both geocoded; see Upgraded.
- mohawk-steering-collision-1935 — left at
none, correctly. The Senate report gives only “off the New Jersey coast,” with no bearing, distance or reference point. Nothing to anchor an honest radius to. - lady-mary-sinking-investigation-2009 — upgraded to
area; the source does give a reference point. - Named historic buildings. Six were re-attempted by name against Nominatim on a clean, paced pass.
Three resolved and were upgraded (Langstaff Mansion, Medford Friends Meeting House,
Convention Hall). Three returned no match and are not in the GNIS extract either — Gabreil Daveis
Tavern, James Still Office, John Woolman Memorial — as did Knight-Pepper House,
North Pemberton station, St. Mary of the Lakes and the NJ Forest Nursery. These stay at
town/township precision. Their
basisfields no longer blame rate-limiting (which is no longer true); they now say what was actually tried and failed. - north-pemberton-station-replacement carries an added warning: its pin is the Pemberton Township civil centroid, roughly 7 km east of Pemberton borough where the depot stands. Worth a proper fix.
Caveats added without moving the pin
gordon-sock-foot-ocean-county-2003 (the circle’s centre is Barnegat Inlet, a shoreline reference only — the foot was 21 miles offshore, so the centre is not a candidate location), jacob-jones-destroyer-loss-1942 and goodsell-henry-oriental-1844 (centres are town points on land; both losses were at sea), hammonton-news-helicopter-crash-2023 (radius widened 8000 → 15000; at the old radius the circle did not even reach Hammonton, 16.9 km away), jersey-devil-newspaper-week-1909 (coordinate is the Camden city point, not East Camden ~3 km east), hackensack-gallagher-wildman-1905 (the source says south of Hackensack; the pin is the city centre), lush-hanley-doroth, lopez-danielle-disappearance-2024.
Verified unchanged
The vanished-town and named-feature pins all check out against GNIS or the NJPB dataset within a few
hundred metres: Harrisville (GNIS 876972), Mount Misery (878559), Hampton Furnace (876920), Fox Chase
(876447), New Lisbon (878745), Atsion (874418), Hampton Gate (876921), Indian Mills (877333), Chatsworth
(875379), South Park (881797), Leeds Point (877726), Lumberton (877991), Mount Holly (878545), Medford
(878247), Tabernacle (881074, Burlington — not the Cape May “Tabernacle”), Medford Lakes (878248),
Hammonton (876915), Del Haven, Gouldtown, Greenwich, Whitesville (Ocean, not the Monmouth duplicate),
Williamstown, Millville (Cumberland, not the Sussex duplicate), Vineland, Cinnaminson, Marlton, Mount
Laurel, Barnegat Inlet, Brigantine, Cape May, Camden, Kearny, North Arlington, Hackensack, Woodbridge,
Deal, Long Branch, Asbury Park, Colliers Mills, Cassville, Bass River, and the Elsinboro / Evesham /
Southampton / Jackson / Galloway / Waterford / West Deptford / Quinton / Berkeley / Pemberton township
centroids. new-era-wreck-1854’s computed Deal–Long Branch midpoint was recomputed and is correct.
The eight remaining none records were each re-read and all eight are correctly unpinnable.
Entry-content problems noticed (NOT fixed — other lanes’ files)
- north-pemberton-station-replacement — the entry never states where the station is, which is why it ended up on a township centroid 7 km from the building. An address would fix the pin.
- merchurio-giuseppe-atsion-1907 — the slug and title spell the victim “Merchurio” while the entry body establishes the correct spelling is Mercurio.
- moses-spencer-1945 — the slug reverses the name: the accused is Spencer Moses, not Moses Spencer. The entry title has it right.
- lamhert-sarah-a-1931 — slug and title carry the source collection’s OCR misspelling “Lamhert”; the entry body establishes Lambert.
- nehrwein-atsion-woman-anna-maria-nehrwein-1887 / nehrwein-maria-kate-1887 — two entries on the same 1887 death, at two different locations and precisions. They will render as two pins ~7 km apart for one body. A merge or an explicit cross-reference is needed before these go on a map.
- knopp-solomon-1872 / hutchinson-a-arthur-1872 — both are drawn from the same damaged 1872 clipping and may concern the same corpse, but are pinned 10.5 km apart (Cassville vs Whitesville). The Knopp entry itself warns against merging them; the map will merge them visually anyway.
- Scope. Eight entries in this batch are nowhere near the Pine Barrens: jack-the-ripper-nyc (Manhattan), imbo-danielle-petrone (Philadelphia), lake-hopatcong-hoppie-serpent-1894 (Sussex/Morris), hunterdon-county-1878, kearny-obrien-wildman-1908, hackensack-gallagher-wildman-1905, north-arlington-mine-dweller-1897, lush-hanley-doroth. Several say so themselves, but a reader panning the map will not expect them. Worth deciding whether they belong on it.
