NJPB Forums crawl: material bearing on the notebook entries
Working notes, 2026-09-06/07. Source: forums.njpinebarrens.com (XenForo; posts sit in div.bbWrapper), fetched with curl and a Safari user-agent, 1.5 s between requests. Coverage:
- All 24 pages of “Pine Barren History Shorts” (thread 12648; 473 posts, mostly by Teegate = Guy Thompson) were fetched, extracted and grepped against a keyword list built from every entry in
search.json(surnames, places, years). - ~150 forum-native keyword searches (the site’s own
/search/searchendpoint works for guests) covering every entry’s key names and places. Google-stylesite:searches were used for the first 24 queries before the session’s web-search budget ran out. - 60 additional threads that the searches surfaced were fetched in full and read.
Everything below cites thread URL, forum handle, post date, and (where the poster gave one) the newspaper and date the poster was transcribing. Teegate’s posts are paraphrases of Newspapers.com scans, not verbatim transcriptions (he says so himself: post 151543, “It is illegal to post the articles so I have to write things up”), so treat wording as his, not the paper’s. Items already recorded in research/2026-09-05-connections-and-leads.md section 5c (quicklime p.2, Nehrwein p.7, Kell/Morey pp.11-12, Carslake pp.15/20, Merchurio thread 14540) are only cross-referenced here, not repeated, except where this pass found something new in them.
Post permalinks: https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/pine-barren-history-shorts.12648/post-NNNNNN resolves directly to a post; page numbers are given as well.

Thread: “Andrew Rider & Charles Wilkinson Stone” — https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/andrew-rider-charles-wilkinson-stone.6885/ (3 pages)
- Teegate, 2011-10-26, post 90414, transcribing two undated 1917 clippings (he does not name the paper):
- “A cablegram was received a few days ago by Detective Parker from the American consul at Cantania [sic], Italy, stating that Raffaele Purcionotte, alleged to have been implicated in the Rider automobile hold-up … had been taken into custody in that country and is now awaiting trial on this charge. He will be prosecuted by the King’s attorney, and the evidence for the prosecution will be depositions taken in this country.” — This is almost certainly the Raffaele Puccinati whom Iraca named at the De Marco trial (prior report, sec. 5a). New fact: a second gang member was arrested in Italy (Catania, Sicily) and was to be tried there, the same procedure used for Schiavo in 1908. Not in the entry.
- “Echo of Rider Tragedy,” dated July 18, 1917 (Teegate gives the headline and date in post 17111 of thread 1956, below): John N. Rigley, 58, sued under the employers’ liability act in Burlington County. He “was assigned by his employers, R. L. Latimer & Company, of Philadelphia, to go to the Rider place to repair some machinery”; shot “in the left arm, shoulder, neck and left leg”; paid $19.80/week for a time; wages $21.50. The item adds that Iraca “is now awaiting electrocution” and “three prisoners alleged to have been implicated in the hold-up are still in the county jail awaiting trial.”
- Contradicts the entry. The entry (and the prior report) call the fourth occupant “James N. Rigby, a Rider bog foreman.” This 1917 item makes him John N. Rigley, a visiting machinery repairman employed by a Philadelphia firm, not a Rider employee. The 1917 Mount Holly News trial report used “John (James N.) Rigby” per the prior report, so the surname is unstable in the sources; the occupation, however, is specific here and should be checked against the Mount Holly News trial coverage before the entry keeps “bog foreman.”
- Teegate, 2011-10-26, post 90411: the South Jersey Republican, Oct. 7, 1916, covers the hold-up (top of page, “A Hold-up and Murder”) and “mentions the location where it occurred”; PDF was at atlanticlibrary.org/newspapers/sjrepublican/SJR10071916.pdf. Says Henry Rider “was shot in the jugular and died there from loss of blood.”
- Teegate, 2010-12-05, post 81497: background on the property. Rider & Wilkinson bogs lay along the Batsto and the Skit Branch at Hampton Furnace; the packing house ruins there were theirs; “by the time the state purchased them in the 1950s the property was owned by Clayberger and Goodrich.” Post 81504: “the state condemned the property at Hampton Furnace in 1964 so that they could control the headwaters of the Batsto.” Teegate found incised “R & W” granite property stones (2010, 2011); one may date “as early as 1875.”
Thread: “Shootout At Hampton Bogs” — https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/shootout-at-hampton-bogs.1956/
- Teegate, 2005-12-05, post 17100, summarizing Arthur Pierce, Family Empire in Jersey Iron, chapter “Three at Hampton”: “10 or 11 men came out of the woods by the bridge and blocked the road. They all wore masks and some of them wore women’s clothes”; the car had “over $4000”; Andrew Rider’s gun jammed and he passed it to the mechanic, who fired back; Henry Rider “was on vacation and had just decided to come along for the ride”; Elsie “believed that they only survived because the gunman had cheap guns.” Pierce’s tally of the gang’s fates (as Teegate relays it): “One bandit was electrocuted in Trenton, one found in Italy and convicted, one was killed in a gang fight in Newark, one captured in a small Pennsylvania town, and one after fleeing to Spain and Italy was found 15 years later in prison in California.” This adds three outcomes the notebook lacks (Newark gang killing, Pennsylvania capture, California prison ~1931). Pierce should be checked directly; the forum post is a paraphrase.
- Teegate, 2007-01-02, post 17110, transcribing an obituary dated Jan. 5, 1938: Mrs. Mary Ida Stout Rider, widow of Andrew Jackson Rider, died at the home of her sister Mrs. Charles Wilson in Vineland; born in Berlin, N.J., daughter of Dr. Huff Stout; Hammonton resident 35+ years; survived by daughter Mrs. Elsie Rider Hinch of Great Neck, L.I., “who as a young woman was in the car when her uncle was fatally shot”; son Charles J. of St. Petersburg, Fla. Mrs. Hinch was the widow of Robert Smathers, brother of U.S. Senator William H. Smathers. So “Elsie Smathers” of 1916 remarried and became Elsie Hinch. Useful for a People page.
- Oriental, 2005-12-12, post 17108: Rider, addressing the American Cranberry Growers’ Association, criticized Burlington County’s “corrupt government that allowed murderers to go free,” apparently referring to the acquittals; contemporary papers reported the remarks as inappropriate. (No citation given; worth locating.)
- Oriental, 2005-12-11, post 17105: places the ambush on Hampton Road north of the Atsion ranger station, “a little more than halfway to Hampton the road does a little turn.” Teegate (post 17102/17104) notes Pierce says they turned off “two miles above Atsion” onto “Hampton Bogs road,” which does not fit the current Hampton Road. Location remains unsettled.
History Shorts p.6, Teegate 2019-06-02, post 155519, citing 4/19/1909 and 4/21/1909 items: Andrew J. Rider sued the Central Railroad of N.J. for a Nov. 1908 locomotive-spark fire in bogs 14 and 15 at Parkdale, Waterford Township (Camden County); jury awarded $1,750; counsel Carrow & Kraft. Establishes Rider held bogs in Camden County as well as Hampton Park. Background only.
Thread “Legendary Lawmen of the Pines” — https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/legendary-lawmen-of-the-pines.14936/ — Teegate 2024-12-07, post 181819: Parker “recaptured” Iraca after the jail escape. (Consistent with the New-York Tribune April 21, 1917 item in the prior report.)
merchurio-giuseppe-atsion-1907.html
Thread 14540 is already summarized in the prior report. Re-read here; two details to add:
- SuperChooch (2023-09-09) spells the victim “Manchurio” throughout, a further variant for record searches.
- ecampbell (2023-09-10, post 176237) mentions, in the same breath, “the body dumped in the woods off of Carranza Road” as a third Hampton-area case; this is the Robert L. Burns skeleton of 1963 (see New-entry seeds).
- Note the entry’s “Rider & Wilkinson” / thread’s “Rider-Wilkinson”: Teegate (thread 6885) says Rider sold to Wilkinson, and Wilkinson’s female heirs became Clayberger and Goodrich (thread 8236 “People of the Pines,” post 97775, Teegate).
carranza.html
History Shorts p.4, Teegate 2018-11-09, post 152810, transcribing the Courier-Post, July 13, 1931, report of the first memorial service (held July 12, 1931): “Arthur Carabine, then a Burlington county detective, went in search of the plane and found it mired IN THE BOGS … Carabine later was decorated by the Mexican government for his efforts in recovering the body.” Teegate’s own comment: “the plane was found in a bog, not at the location where the memorial is currently at. Also, take note that the person that was reported to have found the body is not who this article says found it.”
- Conflicts with the entry, which (from the July 13, 1928 page) credits John Carr and family with finding the wreck and body while berrying, and says Carabine identified the body from papers. The 1931 retrospective is a three-years-later summary and the 1928 report is contemporary, so the entry’s version should stand, but the discrepancy is worth a sentence.
Thread “Carranza road” — https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/carranza-road.5518/ — Teegate 2009-05-02, post 64546, describing the clippings displayed at the 2002 memorial service (photographed but not legible enough to post): “back then if you deserted your husband and moved in with another man, it is best that neither one of you should admit to finding a famous person’s body and take a reward for doing so, and then spending it like it was water.” I.e., a 1928 clipping reported that the finders (presumably John and Marie Carr) were an unmarried couple and that a reward they collected became a public issue; oji (post 64548) guessed the justice of the peace involved was M. Warner Hargrove of Browns Mills. Unverified from the forum; the underlying clipping is not quoted. Jerseyman (post 64541): Carranza Road’s official names are Red Lion Road (206 to Tabernacle) and Hampton Gate Road (south of Tabernacle).
Thread “carranza road, rewriting history” — https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/carranza-road-rewriting-history.2975/ — Teegate 2006-12-20, post 28489: the 1889 Cook map and 1903 Pemberton quad show no road from the “Boot Camp” turnoff to Friendship, “so the story that the road was cut to remove the body of Carranza in 1928 could actually be true.”
History Shorts p.21, Teegate 2023-08-17, post 175905, transcribing July 20, 1928 (New York dateline): the Central Railroad of New Jersey planned a memorial tablet “at Sandy Ridge, near Chatsworth … within a quarter of a mile of the scene of the accident,” suggested by engineer Wilbur E. Jacobus; Superintendent E. T. M. Carr of the New Jersey Southern Division “was the first to report the accident to the army officials at Fort Monmouth and Mitchell Field.” (A railroad Carr, not the berry-picking Carr.) Thread 14182 post (Teegate) transcribes a Dec. 21, 1928 Mount Holly item: the Mexican government asked the State Department for permission to acquire land for a memorial; State Senator Clifford R. Powell involved.
History Shorts p.24, Teegate 2025-04-17, post 183194, transcribing 7/11/1935: CCC Camp 60 (Penn State Forest) brushed out three miles of road, built a 50 x 200 ft parking area and 200 ft of gravel walks at the monument before the July 12, 1935 exercises; work by the Department of Conservation and Development at the request of the Commissioner of Historic Sites, arranged by State Forester Charles P. Wilber.
History Shorts p.4, post 152847 (7/26/1939): the state/WPA widened “Sandy Ridge road” from Friendship Bogs to the monument, 3.2 miles, 20-ft gravel base. Folklore threads (11038 “Haunted Carranza Memorial”; 1153 “Ghost Stories”) record the ghost-plane and hoof-print stories; Jerseyman (post 70107) corrects a poster that Carranza flew alone.
friendship-etc.html and beck-tuckerton-road.html
- Bozarth’s Mill / Sandy Ridge. Thread “The Pioneer Sportsman’s Club” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/the-pioneer-sportsmans-club.14182/, Teegate 2012–2023) documents the club’s original building at Sandy Ridge on Carranza Road (1947 photos) and, via the 1950 census obtained by Richard Franzen of the Tabernacle Historical Society, that “Hilly” in the big house at Sandy Ridge was Earl Hill, b. 1887 (born McBride), Navy veteran, with a much younger second wife, Rose Ann; three Sandy Ridge houses were vacant in 1950. History Shorts p.23 (ecampbell, 2025-01-01, post 182147, quoting the late member “SureSue”): her father lived at Sandy Ridge as a boy; a sawmill stood “way in back of the property” in the sugar sand; the Chatsworth municipal building has Sandy Ridge photographs. Thread 8981 “The Mead & Crane Sawmill At Sandy Ridge” exists (not fetched) and probably names Beck’s “Bozarth’s Mill.”
- Eagle / Charles Wills grave. Thread “Eagle Tavern” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/eagle-tavern.3822/): member Theressa compiled a McCambridge family history; James McCambridge owned the Eagle Tavern; the sign now at Eagle names the wrong owner. Thread 108 “Grave of Charles Wills” and 663 (post by a member whose group included a woman raised at Friendship until age 6 who remembered rotten wooden grave markers at Eagle “just as Father Beck had said”).
- Friendship. Thread “Friendship bogs history” 3467 and “Old Article: Friendship” 4406 exist (fetched, mostly modern site talk); Friendship bogs in 1913 were 500 acres owned by Evans & Wills (History Shorts p.15, post 162732, citing 6/28/1913). Post 182152: Sue’s parents lived in the Friendship buildings and “had to tear down wooden fences to have wood in the winter”; buried at Junior Mechanics Cemetery, Tabernacle (Margaret F. Bakely, 1933–1993).
- Hampton Furnace / David Kell. History Shorts p.18, post 164741 (Teegate 2021-03-27): the David Kell photograph is in the 1936 edition of Beck’s Forgotten Towns, Kell “holding onto a weight forged at Hampton Furnace,” standing by the shed left of the packing house; thread 4376 post 124091 says the weight is now owned by “the daughter of Daryl …” (truncated). Thread 2109 (post 18732): Beck visited Kell’s home at Hampton in the mid-1930s. Kell died May 3, 1945, age 75, husband of Anna Enders Kell, of “Lakeview Drive, Atsion,” buried Jr. O.U.A.M. Cemetery, Tabernacle (post 160311, citing May 5, 1945 obituary). His father Theodore Kell, 63, retired railroad man of Lake Drive, Atsion, died of a heart attack chopping wood Oct. 20, 1936 (post 160343, citing 10/21/1936).
- Jersey Devil “bones” at Clayberger & Goodrich bogs. History Shorts p.18, post 164163, transcribing 10/31/1957: state foresters working “near the southern end of the Clayberger and Goodrich bogs at Hampton Furnace” after a summer fire found a stuffed “half-bird and half-beast” hoax, reported by Conservation Commissioner Joseph E. McLean. A light item, but it ties the Hampton bogs to the Jersey Devil topic page.
- Hampton Gate AME church. History Shorts p.16, post 163677, citing 11/29/1897: “Below Hampton Gate is a little church in which African Methodists used to worship … A few grave stones in the rear”; ecampbell (post 163685) photographed the neglected cemetery in 2002 and mapped it (maps.njpinebarrens.com lat 39.8169, lng -74.6998). Hampton Gate Hotel thread 14262 exists; the RW58a “Rider Wilkinson Clayberger Goodrich” stone is visible under the Hampton Gate bridge (post 172033).
ghost-of-mary-ann-forge.html
Three Mary Ann Forge threads were fetched (663, 1880, 6335). None mentions William R. Hunt, the Quigley house, or the Mount Pleasant / Mount Misery Country Club, so the forum does not corroborate Beck’s country-club story. Thread 663 (2005): an older man, Don Taylor, grandson of Lucy and George Taylor, told a member he lived at Mary Ann Forge with his grandparents until age 12 in what he called the last house there; his grandfather ran a sawmill making cranberry/blueberry box slats; Beck’s book photo is captioned “last dwelling at Mary Ann Forge.” Thread 6335 mentions the flume/sluice that “Black” maintained to carry canal water over Mount Misery Brook. History Shorts p.15, post 162731 (5/3/1923): Mount Misery residents petitioned to rename the village “Mount Bard”; Tom (post 162739) notes the 1850s Joseph Cox Jones-tract survey calls the hill “Mt. Relief.”
chattin-murders-1917-brooksbrae.html
Thread “History of the Brooksbrae Brick Company” — https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/history-of-the-brooksbrae-brick-company.3612/ (3 pages)
- autumn_mist, 2007-05-30, post 34991, transcribes the New Jersey Mirror, Oct. 17, 1917: deer hunters brought the report back “last week”; tragedy “on Thursday”; victim “Harriet, the 12-year-old daughter of Samuel Chattin, living nearby”; “so badly charred when recovered that it was impossible to determine the cause of death. The supposition is that the man had attacked the child and then … killed her, set fire to the shack and then committed suicide. Plazziano was indicted three years ago for selling liquor without a license in the building in which the tragedy occurred.” This is a second contemporary paper (the entry cites the N.J. Courier / Mount Holly News) and is more cautious than Sheriff Brown’s shooting theory: it says cause of death could not be determined.
- Jerseyman, 2007-06-08, post 35013 (census research): the 1910 federal census, Manchester Township, records “Gildo Plazzariano,” living alone at Pasadena, “watchman brick factory,” born in Germany in 1864 of an Italian father and a German mother, arrived in the U.S. in 1906. The same census has Samuel Chattin in Eagleswood Township on Main St. with wife Eva and sons Isaiah (10), Harry (4), Samuel Jr. (2), and no daughter. Jerseyman therefore suggested the victim was actually the son Harry, about 12 in 1917, and the papers or hunters changed the sex. Weigh against the entry’s 1915 state census, which lists a Hannah in Samuel Chatten’s household at Seaside Park; that 1915 record (a girl born after 1910, or a daughter away from home in 1910) supports the papers’ “Harriet/Hannah.” Jerseyman also gives an origin for the “Austrian” tag in the N.J. Courier: German-born of Italian parentage.
- diggersw (Scott W.), 2007-06-04, post 35011/35012: the earlier fatal fire was the Tomaszewski caretakers, Polish immigrants; “There is a state police report on file, as well as several newspaper articles that attest to the lack of foul play”; the only insurance claim filed was for the Tomaszewskis; the Kelly will barred sale for ten years after William Kelly’s 1908 death, which is why the plant sat idle. omega (post 35010) concurs on the will.
- Jerseyman, 2026-01-07, thread 15232 (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/two-heretofore-unseen-photographs-of-the-brooksbrae-factory.15232/): a short article in the new issue of SoJourn (Stockton University, South Jersey Culture & History Center, Amazon ASIN 1947889311) prints two late-1920s photographs of the ruins by M. Warner Hargrove and a classified ad suggesting the plant did fire some brick. Worth obtaining.
Thread “Melancholy Pasadena, the saddest place in the Pines?” — https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/melancholy-pasadena-the-saddest-place-in-the-pines.2967/ — Jerseyman, 2006-12-14, post 28419: names the earlier victims as Jonas and Katherine Tomaszewski, “Polish émigré watchman,” who died the night of 13 September 1915 when a blocked chimney fired; a cranberry-bog worker found the burned house next morning; police ruled it accidental but locals believed robbery. He calls Plazziano “the caretaker of the Brooksbrae plant who took over after Tomaszewski’s death” and dates the Mirror article “October 17, 1918” (a slip; the same poster and thread 3612 give 1917). He also ties Beck’s Peggy Clevenger fable to the Tomaszewski case. Adds to the entry: names and date for the “man and woman burned to death in a house across from the plant.”
quicklime-body-1935.html
Already covered (prior report 5c). One further item from the same post (151676, Teegate 2018-08-04): the “gang ride” phrase and the site description “about 75 yards off of Chatsworth Barnegat Road (532) and 35 feet off of Hundred Dollar Bridge Road” match the entry exactly, so the entry and Teegate used the same Courier-Post coverage.
nehrwein-atsion-woman-anna-maria-nehrwein-1887.html
Covered in the prior report (posts 157591, 157593). No new forum material. Note only that Teegate’s transcription renders the hotel keeper as “Iran Crain, Crane” and the card as “Susan Weller 260 First Avenue.”
carslake-charles-l-1933.html
Covered in the prior report. Two additions from the same thread page:
- Teegate 2020-08-10, post 162127: other articles (not transcribed) reported Carslake seen at Woodmansie, and “a large group crashed through the thicket to get to the location where Carranza crashed looking for him there.”
- bobpbx 2020-08-09, post 162123: the 1931 aerials show few cranberry bogs on the Papoose Branch; “somebody tried something on the main branch near where the east and west branch come together,” which is where the “cranberry bogs of the West Papoose swamp” phrase would point; he also calls the “Sim Place … south of Martha Furnace and Calico” line “way off base” geographically.
- Pineman32 (G. Mick Jr.), 2023-06-18, post 175101: “My grandfather Webster Mick established Mick’s Gulf Service in 1930. There was no gas station prior to that date.” This bears on Teegate’s guess that Harry Leeks’ 1933 filling station was at the later Mick’s Canoe Rental site; it confirms a station existed there by 1933 but under Mick, not Leeks, so the Leeks station may have been elsewhere on the Harrisia–Speedwell–New Gretna road.
atsion-rifle-murder-1945.html
Covered in the prior report (Kell/Morey). One addition: thread “Atsion: Old and Renewed” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/atsion-old-and-renewed.4376/, Teegate, post 45293) lists private parcels remaining after the state purchase: “On the curve on Atsion Road just before the lake was Millie (Millie et al) and Millie, Morey et als. The state acquired one of the three properties there on 1/30/2000.” So a Morey-family lot on the curve of Atsion Road at the lake was still privately held into the 1990s; this is the strongest forum pointer to where the “Lake Road cottage” was.
wainright-james-1884-bamber.html
- Thread “Bamber Lake Club/Camp Columbus. Say Hello.” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/bamber-lake-club-camp-columbus-say-hello.13028/), Oriental, 2019-05-20, post 155280: “The murder of James Wainwright by Elson Rockwell in 1885 made quite the stir … Many Bamber area locals gave testimony.” (1885 is the trial year; the killing was 1884.) Also notes Bamber was called Cedar Crest for a time.
- History Shorts p.15, Teegate 2020-08-14, post 162159: Charles Remine of Wrightstown and Warner Hargrove “both … helped Beck with various projects including the ‘Murder at Bamber’ research”; Remine died 1936, buried Wrightstown Methodist cemetery. So Beck wrote a Courier-Post piece on the Wainwright case (c. 1930), a source the entry does not have.
- History Shorts pp.7–8, posts 157640 (8/11/1915) and 157642 (12/23/1920): the Bamber tract, “for years the property of the Hurry family,” became the Cedar Crest Orchard and Produce Company (150,000 peach trees, superintendent E. W. Weimar), bankrupt 1920; reached only by the Tuckerton Railroad south of Whitings or sand roads. Background for a Bamber place page.
3-murdered-1934.html
No forum thread on the Ong’s Hat triple killing. Thread “Ongs Hat” 1199 was fetched; it is about the name and the oak. Nothing to add.
mob-murder-1941.html, rego-joe-1937.html, canzoneri-andrew-1938.html, stiletto-murder-1892.html, philips-mary-atsion-1880.html
Not on the forum. The nearest thing: thread “Atsion Area Murders” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/atsion-area-murders.6866/), aleahey, 2010-11-28, linking andrewleahey.org posts on the Rider case and “some poor mentally challenged girl attacked and kill[ed] around the turn of the century” near Atsion (this is presumably Nehrwein 1887 or Phillips 1880; the linked pages are not on the forum).
hitchhiking-teens-1972-caldwell-and-soden.html
Thread “Gacy Search Solves New Jersey Missing Person Case” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/gacy-search-solves-new-jersey-missing-person-case.9236/), Teegate 2013-05-14/15: links NBC10 and Inquirer (May 15, 2013, “Bones revive 41-year-old Pine Barrens mystery”); NBC wording: Soden “was last seen running from the Bass River Camp Grounds with his 12-year-old friend Donald Caldwell the night of April 3, 1972”; remains “found near where the teen was last seen.” Nothing beyond the 2013 releases; members complained the state would not give the location.
reso-sidney-kidnapped-1992.html
Not discussed on the forum (search “Reso” returned nothing relevant).
bender-craig-1940.html
Thread “Missing Child - Beachwood 1940” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/missing-child-beachwood-1940.12922/), started by aleahey 2019-02-24. Oriental, 2019-02-25, post 154127: Louis Mantell of Pemberton, president of the New Jersey Fox Hunters’ Association, “and other fox hunters took 150 to 200 dogs up to Beachwood to help search for the missing boy,” joining “some two weeks after the kid went missing” (source article not named). Mantell later bought ~900 acres between Tabernacle and Chatsworth (now South Park Gun Club). Adds a search detail the entry lacks. (An Irving Mantell, district fire warden, appears in the 1958 Oswego Gun Club rescue, History Shorts p.1, post 151429.)
cohen.html (Red Lion Motel)
Thread “Missing Person in Red Lion, Southampton Area” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/missing-person-in-red-lion-southampton-area.10911/), coppersisters, 2015-12-12, reposting the NJSP Facebook notice of Dec. 8, 2015: reported missing April 22, last seen April 20 at the Red Lion Motel, US 206, Southampton; traveling from out of state to visit a friend in Lacey Township; description age 43, 5’7”, 160 lbs, hazel eyes, bald, “iron cross” tattoo on right side of abdomen, wreath-and-rod tattoo on upper right chest; Red Lion Station 609-859-2282; hunters asked to be vigilant. Also links a family Facebook page “Searching for Dave.” The tattoo descriptions are not in the entry.
body-found-in-stafford-forge-do-you-know-this-man-barnegat-nj-patch.html
Thread “Man Goes Missing During Hunting Trip” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/man-goes-missing-during-hunting-trip.9590/, 6 pages) resolves what the Patch link is. Teegate, 2013-12-20, post 116281, quoting the Asbury Park Press of Dec. 19–20, 2013: an unidentified man’s body was found at 12:55 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, by two dog walkers in Stafford Forge WMA, Eagleswood Township; no ID, no obvious trauma, autopsy inconclusive; described as Hispanic, 50–60, 5’5”–5’8”, 130–165 lbs; Toms River police drew a sketch; contact Det. Sgt. Simonson, Tuckerton Station, 609-296-3132. State Police Lt. Steve Jones said explicitly “the body was not that of a hunter missing since October in the Warren Grove area.”
- That hunter is the thread’s subject: Barnett “Barry” Zeldin, 74, of Mays Landing (NamUs MP#22276 gives Chatsworth), missing since Oct. 7, 2013 while scouting deer at the Warren Grove Recreation Area; his Blazer was found on FAA Tower Road (Teegate, post 115079, maps.njpinebarrens.com lat 39.7522, lng -74.3952); family (daughter-in-law Debbie Zeldin posting) organized volunteer searches from the Warren Grove firehouse with forum members; no dental records; DNA on file. The thread runs to 2014 with no recovery reported. Zeldin is a candidate for a new entry, and the Patch page in the notebook is about the other body. The entry should say so.

- Thread “Family organizing search party to seek missing couple” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/family-organizing-search-party-to-seek-missing-couple.1543/), Teegate 2005-04-06: a family-organized pinelands search was planned for April 16, 2005 (phillyburbs.com link); woodjin saw a low-flying black helicopter over the Chips Folly area of Bass River the next morning.
- Thread “Body found along route 72, woodland twp” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/body-found-along-route-72-woodland-twp.2334/), April 24–28, 2006: a decomposed body was found under debris by dam workers in Brendan Byrne SF near Route 70 and Washington Boulevard (Reeves Bogs), Woodland Township; gagliarchives (post 21311) recalled that rangers and state police had responded at Harrisville the previous year “to the anonymous letter saying they [Imbo and Petrone] were buried out there.” Follow-up thread “Body Id’d at Brendan Byrne SF” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/body-idd-at-brendan-byrne-sf.2363/, 2006-05-02): the body was a woman, “a mother of three,” not Imbo. Name not given in the forum; the Courier-Post of April 28, 2006 is linked.
pine-robbers-the.html
Thread “Tory Pine Tree Robbers” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/tory-pine-tree-robbers.14153/), manumuskin, 2022-07-30, quoting a family history that in turn quotes Barber, Historical Collections of New Jersey (1845), pp. 352–353 and 370–371, and the 1843 statement of Mrs. Amelia Dennis Coryell: the raiders were Fagan, Burke (Stephen Emmons), and Smith (a spy inside the gang); the house was “south of the Manasquan River about four miles below … Howell Mills”; the wife was Hanna Little Dennis, husband Capt. (later Major) Benjamin Dennis; the $80 purse; hanging from a cedar with a bed cord; a shot at Amelia missed and hit John Holmes’s wagon; Fagan was killed by Dennis’s militia the following Wednesday, buried, disinterred and hung in chains on a chestnut at Colt’s Neck (N.J. Archives 2d ser. II p. 466); Dennis killed Emmons/Burke with Stephen West and Ezekiel Williams; Dennis himself was shot dead in July 1779 by Lewis Fenton and Thomas Emmons/Burke between Coryell Falls and Shrewsbury; the widow married John Lambert, later acting governor and U.S. senator. Ben Ruset (post 170380): Fagan’s cave near Farmingdale is in Beck’s More Forgotten Towns, ch. 22. Thread “The Baron of the Pines” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/the-baron-of-the-pines.6106/) has Jerseyman’s long piece on Fenton, an 1835 article on Fagan’s hanging, and a link to the Journal of the American Revolution article “Loyalist ‘Banditti’ of Monmouth County: Jacob Fagan and Lewis Fenton.” This supplies the ending the entry’s truncated scan lacks (Smith the spy, Fagan’s death, Dennis’s 1779 murder), from a citable 1845 source rather than the Monmouth Weekly Herald.
shotwell-foster-wood-alcohol-1907.html

beebe-david-1907-murdered.html, reily-*, butler-harriet-servant-woman-1909.html, simons-jacob-1893.html
No forum material. Chairville thread 11615 (Jerseyman’s “A History of Chairville”) is background for the Beebe entry’s place; the Peacock cemetery at Chairville was fenced c. 2013 (post 112817).
whitings-station-* entries (1892, 1897, 1904, 1905, 1917, 1936, 1942)
No thread on the station fires or accidents. Related Whiting-area items in History Shorts p.1 (post 151521, Teegate 2018-07-22): the Beaver Dam bogs on Route S-40 (now 70) near Whiting: 11/26/1935 ABC raid on a sugar-alcohol still in the cranberry house (Edward Barsugla, Angelo Furelli, Joseph Burgo held in $10,000 each); 1939 Beaver Dam Cranberry Co. v. Pennsylvania Railroad verdicts ($17,495, then $18,275, reduced to $12,000 in 1940) over a May 1936 brush-burning fire; 1954 migrant-labor indictment of president William Grossman (families housed in two old trolley cars). p.16, post 163674 (5/26/1952): bog workers James Butler and Robert Watts jailed 30 days after fighting at Route 40 and Browns Mills Road. p.6, post 155196: “Rattlesnake Ace” Pittman’s father’s brickyard was at Whiting and burned. These could seed a Whiting place page but do not touch the seven entries.
royal-pine-1930.html and korman-robert-almost-skeletal-man-berkeley-1972.html
Thread “Pinehurst or Pinewald?” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/pinehurst-or-pinewald.1667/), cabletrash (Dom), 2005-07-10, post 14227 (grew up in Pinewald, worked in the building): the resort had a boathouse on the lake, a boathouse and pavilion on Barnegat Bay at Bayville, a dance pavilion, golf course, and “a bath house on cedar creek which we used to call the spanish mansion”; a tunnel runs from the boiler room under the street to beneath the boathouse, with a main room and smaller rooms (“so the speakeasy part could be true”); nursing-home names in sequence Pinehurst, Pinehaven, Bayview. He attributes the design to “William Sanger, husband of … Margaret Sanger”; a later poster (post 115274) corrects the developer to Benjamin Sangor and says he was not an architect. (The prior report has the architect as W. K. Oltar-Jevsky; the Sanger claim is unsupported.) Thread “Dennis Memorial Hospital” 5832, Jerseyman: the hospital, “a.k.a. the Dennis Rest Resort & Convalescent Sanitarium,” was in the Royal Pines building and well known in the 1940s. No forum mention of Korman.

Not on the forum. Thread “Burlington County Insane Asylum?” 3071 covers New Lisbon / Four Mile Colony history (Jerseyman) but not the 1954 search. For Moses/Maxwell: History Shorts p.23, post 182129 (Teegate 2024-12-31) transcribes the 1920 census, Bass River Township outlying district: James H. Maxwell, 31, sawyer at the mill, wife Mary E. 24, daughters Gladdis and Dorothy; “He died fairly young”; Green Bank Cemetery. A James Maxwell of Burlington County who died young is the right name and county for the 1945 stabbing victim, but the 1920 Bass River sawyer would have been about 56 in 1945 and the entry says nothing of his age; no more than a lead to check the Green Bank stone’s death date.
general-clinton-s-treasure-1892.html
Nothing on Paisley/South Park treasure. Two adjacent items: History Shorts p.20, post 168139 (8/1/1954): treasure diver Arthur McKee (Florida, Smithsonian-affiliated) recovered fittings believed to be from the British sloop Zebra, flagship of “Commodore Sir Henry Clinton’s” 1778 Chestnut Neck expedition, from 25 ft of water in the Mullica, with help of shipyard operators Horatio and Stanley Cramer; relics sent to the Smithsonian. And p.2, post 151730: South Park is the area around the Bordentown Gun Club on 532 at the sharp curve; Dr. Martin W. Curran of South Park was horsewhipped by Albert LeDuc at Harris (Pine Crest) station, July 1912; Curran had been placed in charge of Dr. White’s Apple Pie Hill sanitarium; Curran d. 4/17/1940 at Chatsworth (Find a Grave 118266771).

Not on the forum, except: thread 14936 (PieONeer, 2024-12-07) recalls a passage in McPhee or Coakley about Ellis Parker finding a buried body in the pines “because the sphagnum moss was growing in a different way” — this is the David Paul case (Iricks Causeway; tannery water). “Furnishing Style” thread 14857 (post 180652): the Henchmen motorcycle club “went defunct in the early or mid 70s when the Pagans forced them to either get lost or join the Pagans” (relevant to Pohlig’s Henchmen).
mossing-for-defense-1942.html
Nothing (search “sphagnum moss aircraft” returned nothing).
towns-anna-1836-poison-liquor.html
Nothing on the West Creek shack death. History Shorts p.22, post 177860 (Teegate 2024-01-21) gives a much earlier Tuckerton-area exposure death, George Lungin, frozen to death Dec. 21, 1831, returning from Martha Furnace; reported 1/4/1832 (paper not named); found at the door of an abandoned house five miles from Martha and five from home; wife and two children. New-entry seed (below).
wild man entries, animal escapes, bigfoot.html
Nothing relevant on the forum for the 1875–1882 “wild man” items or the 1926–1963 animal escapes. Thread 1013 “Confirmed Black Bear in south Jersey” and 6702 “Feral Dogs” (dogs from the house at Eagle) are modern.

Pine Barrens deaths, disappearances and crimes not in the notebook, with the poster’s source where given.
- Marlton man, 1978, infant son stabbed, Wharton State Forest — History Shorts p.1, Teegate 2018-07-13, post 151386 (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/pine-barren-history-shorts.12648/post-151386). Teegate deliberately anonymizes him as “Billy.” Articles of Aug. 22–23, 1978: a 30-year-old Marlton man found wandering on Penn Swamp–Quaker Bridge Road by park rangers; his 10-month-old son found stabbed in the chest in the car trunk in “a secluded section of Washington Township”; “another article also stated that his eyes were missing”; arraigned, transferred to the Vroom Building; 5/26/1979 ruled insane, sent to Ancora; released to family by 1982; killed in a Route 40 crash near Atlantic City, reported 8/8/1982. Courier-Post/Burlington County Times Aug. 1978 would name him.
- Robert L. Burns, 28, Philadelphia pre-med student, missing April 24, 1962; skeleton found by hunters Dec. 10, 1963 off Carranza Road — post 167143, Teegate 2021-12-06, transcribing Dec. 11, 1963. Found by Lloyd Pugh of Camden with four others “about 14 miles south of” Vincentown, bones scattered near a 2.5-ft circular depression; wallet with military ID and Social Security card; had left Philadelphia with Donald Bermender to fetch books from Bermender’s summer home; Bermender’s car found May 9, 1962 on Germantown Avenue; bogs had been drained in the 1962 search. aleahey (post 167186) found a Courier-Post item of April 1, 1975, p. 3 reporting that Burns’s widow Ethel was murdered. No outcome posted.
- Edgar Old Sr., 72, Camden deputy game warden, died Feb. 17, 1958 at the Oswego Gun Club cabin (Micks Place), Bass River Township, during the blizzard — post 151429, Teegate 2018-07-15. Son and Harold Gerkens walked five miles for help; rescue by fire wardens Irving Mantell and William T. Sloan by four-wheel-drive truck from Chatsworth; body left overnight; Coroner Stoddard retrieved it. Natural death; strong place story.
- Thomas Hyland, 65, Atsion carpet weaver, hanged himself April 19, 1903 in an abandoned house at Stone Bridge (East Fruitland) on the Atsion–Batsto road — post 151815 (4/20/1903 item); Don Catts, post 151942, adds 1880 census (widower, nine children, three sons at the Atsion cotton mill) and 1876 business directory.
- Atwood Tomlin, 76, cranberry-bog watchman, found dead c. Oct. 21, 1947 in a picker’s shack on Carranza Road, Tabernacle, dead since about Oct. 4, found by Mrs. Mamie Prickett; Coroner Richard A. Grover; buried county burial ground, New Lisbon — post 158116 (10/22/1947). Earlier posts (158120, 158126) show Tomlin jailed 90 days in 1932 for shot-size violation (Game Warden Roy R. Carson) and, aged 30, shanghaied to England with James Chambers of “Skyeville.”
- David Thomas, 58, deer-hunting guide, died of a heart attack on the Chatsworth–Tabernacle Road Dec. 13, 1947 leading the Roosevelt Deer Club of Trenton — post 158137.
- George Lungin, frozen to death Dec. 21, 1831 between Martha Furnace and Tuckerton — post 177860 (1/4/1832). Oldest death report in the crawl.
- Mark Anthony Foulks killed his father Joseph Foulks with a slab at Hanover Furnace, June 28, 1861 — thread “Murder at Hanover Furnace” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/murder-at-hanover-furnace.1850/), Ariadne, 2005-10-17, transcribing the New Jersey Mirror of July 4, July 11, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, 1861 (trial testimony of Samuel Rhubart; Attorney General F. T. Frelinghuysen assisting; Ewan Merritt for the defense; jury named). Verdict is on the thread’s second page (fetched; not read here). A complete, citable 1861 parricide.
- Margaret “Peggy” Clevenger, c. 80, burned in her cabin on the Old Shore road between Mount Misery and Cedar Bridge, early Dec. 1857 — thread “Poor Peggy Clevenger: Murder or Just an Accident?” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/poor-peggy-clevenger-murder-or-just-an-accident.8303/), Jerseyman, 2012-05-18, transcribing New Jersey Mirror, Dec. 10, 1857 p. 3 (murder rumor; colliers; hogs poisoned, horse’s throat cut) and Dec. 17, 1857 p. 3 (letter of Joseph W. Cox, Hanover Furnace, Dec. 12: accident from the fireplace; she was addicted to opium; two or three cents found; remains buried at Wrightstown by undertaker Joel Mount of Juliustown). William Dothey Clevenger; children John R., Sarah Blake Chamberlin, Thomas, Samuel; 1849 map, 1850 census Pemberton Twp.) and the 1902 Detroit Free Press snake-hunting article that retells her ghost. Beck’s “Pine Barrens witch” story reduced to sources.
- Lilliendahl murder, Sept. 1927, Great Swamp Road (Route 206) near Dave Amato’s — post 152075, Teegate 2018-09-08: Margaret Thompson Lilliendahl claimed two men on the running board killed her husband; Dave Amato was among the first on the scene and testified; trial 1928; link to malefactorsregister.com “If This Is Manslaughter.” Hammonton-area (Atlantic County) but on the notebook’s Atsion–206 axis.
- Chiselers Club / Adolf Arends, Bamber–Waretown, 1933–35 — post 151926, Teegate 2018-08-25: Oct. 23–24, 1933 the Chiselers gun club (old Tilly Collins house at Black’s Bridge) burned after Joel Ridgeway and Clarence VanNote of Bamber were refused a loan (charged with arson, outcome not found); May 19, 1935 Col. Leonidas Coyle, from the air, saw a man setting spot fires along the road to the club; Arends (Beck’s “Dolph Arens”) and Oscar Brown of Waretown arrested, grand jury no-billed them in Sept. 1935; fire burned 25,000 acres. Arends’ 1914 household theft case also given.

Sullivan 19, Stanley Carr 23, John LaSalle 20 of the Bass River CCC camp; Kingsley White 38, Whitesville fireman; State Forest Ranger Ira Morey 35, West Creek) — thread “Tidbit” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/tidbit.2986/), Teegate 2006-12-28, post 28663, transcribing a May 27, 1936 paper in full; memorial at Bass River. Note the Morey surname at West Creek (Alfred Morey, fire warden; William Morey injured) for the Atsion Morey question, though West Creek is far from Atsion.
- Jersey Central / Oswego–Martha snow rescue, Charles Marshall laudanum suicide 1876 near “Sandy Ridge” — post 177861: Teegate notes this Sandy Ridge is not the Pine Barrens one (Find a Grave: Charles Marshall 1809–1876); exclude.
- Alfred Gaskill, first State Forester (1907–22), shot himself at Lake Dunmore, Vt., Sept. 6, 1950 — posts 161248/161251. Not a Pine Barrens death but a Pine Barrens figure (Lebanon State Forest acquisitions).
- Unidentified stabbed man, Chew Road, Wharton SF (Waterford), found March 7, 2004; killed Jan. 26, 2004; two brothers from a Winslow trailer park arrested April 2004 — thread “Dead body near Chew Road” (https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/dead-body-near-chew-road.871/), Teegate and RednekF350, 2004. Same thread: RednekF350 (post 6345) says Gary Heidnik signed a woman out of Ancora, killed her and dumped her 50 ft off Chew Road (“Heidnik’s Hollow”), and c. 1999 two women shot a bailed-out boyfriend at the Parkdale bogs (RMICKLE in thread 2307 puts a similar 1996-ish Medford case “off Route 206 south of Atsion”); suresue (post 6350) recalls the 1980s backhoe dig at the Silly Gator bar, Nesco, for Sam Siligato’s missing “acquaintances.”
- Jessica Tush, 19, Staten Island, strangled; shallow grave off Route 679 near Harrisville/Maxwell, found April 3, 2008; Thomas Paolino pleaded guilty 2009 (23.5 years) — threads 4478 and 5745 (Burlington County Prosecutor press release 2009-44 quoted in full).

Relevant to the Ancora thread running through
clump-of-woods-man-1956. - Walter Raleigh attempted murder, Atsion, reported Oct. 23, 1879 — thread https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/walter-raleigh-attempts-murder.14765/ (NMuscella, 2024-04-07).
