Nan Hunter-Walnut and Bishop Farmstead — source trail

Checked October 4, 2026. Public entry: entry/nan-hunter-walnut-pinelands-boundaries.html.

  • Pinelands Alliance Hall of Fame profile identifies Hunter-Walnut as a Pine Barrens Coalition founder, a 1977 Pinelands Review Committee participant, and a Southampton planning-board member from 1978 to 2003. This is a retrospective organizational account, not the committee’s original appointment record.
  • Pinelands Commission chronology dates Byrne’s review committee to 1977 and the commission and protection act to 1979. The state history of Executive Orders 56 and 71 dates the broad development moratorium to February 8, 1979. The Alliance profile’s reference to a 1977 moratorium should not collapse these separate actions.
  • The 1992 Plan Review Workshops report reproduces a June 1992 Alliance committee letter. Its letterhead lists Nan Hunter-Walnut as Pine Barrens Coalition coordinator. That listing does not establish that she wrote the letter’s policy text.
  • The June 12, 2009 Commission packet contains May 8, 2009 meeting minutes, starting at PDF p. 11. Her comment after the Woodland Township road vote appears at PDF p. 24. The packet date is not the date she spoke.
  • The 2013 Philadelphia Inquirer obituary reports her death and age 86. This alone does not fix a birth year without her birthday.
  • The Alliance headquarters page and directions publish 17 Pemberton Road, Southampton, as the present visitor center and describe the unpaved visitor lot. This is a later learning stop, not her home or the 1977 committee meeting place. The prior farmstead story pin was the USGS Southampton Township reference point. The replacement coordinate, about 39.939581, -74.747999, came from OpenStreetMap address way 11627051 and is an approximate building point, not surveyed parking.

Open questions: obtain the original 1977 committee membership and boundary documents; check whether 1977 used a narrower administrative review or moratorium distinct from the 1979 broad prohibition; identify a contemporary coalition document that shows Hunter-Walnut’s own drafting or public argument.
