Identity and source cautions
The two Willises are different people. Willis Jefferson was married to Myrtle; his son Willis Jonathan “Jack” was married to Katie/Katherine Ritzendollar. The 2004 nomination cites a 1992 videotaped interview with Katie, but we have not inspected that recording. Its historical statements should be attributed to the nomination rather than presented as verbatim oral testimony. The nomination identifies migrant agricultural workers as customers without naming them or giving their perspective.
The building’s listed street address is a historic-property identifier. A 1999 reopening reported by the nomination and its 2004 registration do not establish present interior access. Do not create a visit destination or tour stop until current public access and a safe arrival point have been verified. The Chatsworth locality may give geographic context without implying permission to visit the store.
