Medford Leas and Jackie Wilson — source check (October 1, 2026)

Finding

Wilson collapsed onstage at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill on September 29, 1975. After hospital care, he entered Medford Leas in Medford in May 1977 according to the 1984 Billboard obituary; a June 4, 1977 Billboard notice independently places him there. He was still there in June 1980. UPI reports he was transferred from Medford Leas to Burlington County Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly, where he died January 21, 1984. These are distinct locations and stages of the story.

Editorial limits

  • Do not say Wilson died at Medford Leas. UPI places death at Burlington County Memorial Hospital, Mount Holly.
  • Do not identify a specific campus building, room, or point beyond the main campus. No checked source locates his care more precisely.
  • Do not claim he was in a continuous coma through death. The 1980 Bulletin explicitly says otherwise.
  • The stage collapse and Medford residence are separate places and years. Cross-link the Latin Casino entry rather than mapping the stage event to Medford.
  • Contemporary reports call his collapse a heart attack, but the entry need not assert a precise clinical diagnosis beyond the reported medical crisis.

October 2 follow-up

  • Bob Greene, “Lonely Teardrops for Singer Now,” Orange Coast Pilot, February 12, 1978, reports that Joyce McRae moved to New Jersey to be near Wilson, visited him daily at Medford Leas, read and spoke to him, and played his records. Greene says awareness was uncertain. McRae’s confidence that Wilson understood her and her concern about therapy are attributed to her, not treated as established clinical findings. The scanned newspaper was inspected directly.
  • Medford Leas’s main-campus address point at 39.90525, -74.816021 remains appropriate as a locality marker. No correction to the entry’s campus location or institutional chronology was needed.
