Round eight, “the harder leads” — research log, September 12, 2026

Lane E was assigned four leads from research/agents/njpb-forum.md, all more fragile than the usual community-thread material: a 1962-63 disappearance/skeleton, a 1985 beating conviction, a 1978 tragedy involving a dead infant that the forum deliberately anonymized, and two wholly uncited forum recollections. Checked search.json first (374 entries; grepped for Burns, Bermender, Carranza-related titles, Ryan/Jones Mill/Budai/Bodine, Marlton/Ancora, Wading River, New Gretna, Route 563/679) — none of the four leads are covered by an existing entry. The “Carranza Road” hits in search.json are all about Emilio Carranza’s 1928 plane crash and the road’s namesake history, unrelated to Robert Burns.

Outcome: all four leads dropped. Zero new entries this round. No entry HTML was written, so round-eight-hard-items.json and locations/round-eight-hard.json are empty arrays. This is a sourcing-infrastructure failure as much as a leads failure — the specific search tools available this session could not reach the paper trail these stories need — recorded in detail below so a future pass with better access can pick it up.

Session tooling constraints encountered

  • WebSearch: exhausted for the whole session (shared budget across parallel lanes) before any query for this lane returned results — confirmed with two separate attempts, both refused with “this session has used its web search budget (200 of 200).”
  • General web search via WebFetch (Bing, Google, DuckDuckGo HTML): all three returned either bot-check/CAPTCHA pages or generic irrelevant results (e.g., a Bing query for “Wilson Ryan” “Jones Mill” returned Wilson Sporting Goods pages; a DuckDuckGo HTML query returned “select all squares containing a duck”). Not usable as sources in any case per the brief, but also useless as a discovery step.
  • fultonhistory.com: unreachable from this sandbox — requests return a generic parked/template page unrelated to the site’s real content, not the newspaper archive.
  • panewsarchive.psu.edu: the search form loads, but query parameters (txq, a=q, etc.) tried against both WebFetch and direct curl returned the plain landing page each time, never a results list. Also this archive is Pennsylvania-only; none of the four leads have a known Philadelphia Inquirer connection strong enough to justify more attempts at cracking its query syntax except for lead 1 (Burns was a Philadelphia resident) — see below.
  • Burlington County Library New Jersey Mirror index (netscape.bcls.lib.nj.us / www.netscape.bcls.lib.nj.us): the bare domain returns an empty cached “no results” page for a leftover query, and every subpath guessed (/mirror, /nj-mirror, /mirror/search.php, etc.) routed to an unrelated third-party page (title “taxnotes.com”) — the site is not reachable in a usable way from this environment. In any case the brief notes it only covers 1818-1947 with a stated exception for the 1957 Jones Mill blowtorch item (lead 2’s second half); it would not reach the 1962-63 Burns case, the 1978 Marlton case, the 1985 Ryan beating, or the 1990s Wading River/New Gretna recollections even if reachable.
  • loc.gov / Chronicling America (Bash curl only, 15+ second gaps honored throughout): confirmed reachable and returning real JSON, but its New Jersey digitized-newspaper holdings do not extend into the 1960s-1980s window any of these four leads need. A query for "Carranza Road" returned four hits, none in New Jersey and all from 1914-1916 (Evening Star, Carlsbad Current, Durango Semi-Weekly Herald, El Paso Herald) — none relevant. No second query was worth the 15-second wait once it was clear the era is out of range.
  • CourtListener (rate-limited to 5/min, respected with sleeps): searched Budai and State v. Budai broadly. The only New Jersey “Budai” opinion on the platform is Budai v. Teague, 212 N.J. Super. 522 (App. Div. 1986) — a Somerset County dog-bite civil suit brought by Carol and John Budai, Sr., unrelated to Robert E. Budai of the Jones Mill Gun Club case (read in full to confirm: it concerns a dog bite while dog-sitting, decided by Judge Arnold, no connection to Wilson Ryan, Woodland Township, or Route 532). A trial-level guilty plea/conviction of the kind described for Budai and the Bodines would not generate a published appellate opinion unless appealed, and no appeal surfaced in either search. Nothing useful for the 1978 Marlton insanity case either (an NGI committal to Ancora is not the kind of proceeding that produces a CourtListener-indexed opinion, and none was found under likely search terms).
  • Google Books API (used as an improvised extra source for lead 1 and 2): returned HTTP 429 (rate-limited) on both attempts; not pursued further given the WebSearch exhaustion made a second channel important to try, but it never returned data this session.
  • archive.org: reachable and returns real JSON, but advancedsearch.php only indexes item metadata (title/description/subject), not the OCR body text of scanned newspapers, so queries like "Carranza Road" skeleton and "Wharton State Forest" 1978 infant correctly returned zero metadata matches — this endpoint cannot answer the kind of question these leads need.
  • NamUs (tried opportunistically for leads 1 and 4, since it worked for a different lane’s Warren Grove missing-person entry): NamUs’s unidentified-persons search endpoint requires a POST body whose real field names could not be reverse-engineered in the time available — every attempt returned the full unfiltered database count (15,538) with an empty results array rather than an error, so no case-level data was retrievable this session.

Lead-by-lead

1. Robert L. Burns (Philadelphia, missing 1962, skeleton found 1963, Carranza Road)

Searched: WebSearch (blocked by budget), Bing/DuckDuckGo via WebFetch (unusable), panewsarchive (Burns was Philadelphia-based, so this was the best-fit archive tried — no results extractable), Chronicling America ("Carranza Road" — no NJ or 1960s hits), archive.org metadata search (no hits), Google Books API (429, no data). No source opened this session confirms any fact about Burns beyond what the forum thread already states (name, age, hometown, the missing/found dates, Bermender, the wallet, the drained bogs). Per the brief, forum text is a lead only, never a citable source, and the additional claim about his widow Ethel’s 1975 murder was explicitly flagged as needing separate verification — which was not possible here either. Dropped: no contemporary published account was opened this session to write from.

2. Wilson L. Ryan / Jones Mill Gun Club beating, 1985 (Budai, Bodines) and 1957 blowtorch

Searched: WebSearch (blocked), Bing/DuckDuckGo (unusable), CourtListener (Budai, State v. Budai — only an unrelated 1986 Somerset County dog-bite civil case, read and ruled out), the Burlington County Mirror index (unreachable; and per the brief it would not reach 1985 anyway, though it might reach the 1957 explosion if it were reachable). No newspaper or court record opened this session names Wilson Ryan, Robert E. Budai, or Glendora/Barbara Bodine, or describes the January 4, 1985 beating or the September 24, 1957 explosion. Dropped: same reasoning — zero verifiable sourcing reached.

3. 1978 Marlton case (Penn Swamp-Quaker Bridge Road, infant found dead, Ancora, 1982 crash)

Per the brief this one required special care regardless of sourcing difficulty: write only if contemporary published reports carry the facts, keep it clinical, omit all injury detail (including the unverified eye-mutilation claim the forum itself flags as unconfirmed), and center the legal disposition. Searched: WebSearch (blocked), Bing/DuckDuckGo (unusable), CourtListener (no NJ insanity-commitment or Route 40 fatal-crash record surfaced under plausible search terms; an involuntary-commitment order following an NGI verdict is not the kind of matter that produces a published appellate opinion in the first place), archive.org metadata search ("Wharton State Forest" 1978 infant — no hits). No contemporary Courier-Post or Burlington County Times article was located or opened. Dropped, per the brief’s own instruction to drop rather than write from forum recollection when sourcing is thin — sourcing here is not thin, it is absent.

4. Wading River c. 1994 woman’s body (Route 563) and New Gretna c. 1996 dismembered body (Route 679)

The brief already labels these “NO citation” recollections from a single 2006 forum thread (“Need some info for a book”) and instructs: find real contemporary coverage or drop and record the failed search, never write from recollection. Searched: WebSearch (blocked), Bing/DuckDuckGo (unusable), archive.org metadata search, and an attempted NamUs unidentified-persons query for New Jersey recoveries 1993-1997 (the API accepted requests but never returned filtered results — several plausible JSON body shapes were tried and all returned the unfiltered 15,538-case total with an empty results array, so it could not be used to check whether either case corresponds to a real open NamUs UP case). No contemporary newspaper item was located for either incident. Dropped, exactly as the brief anticipates for uncited recollections that can’t be confirmed.

What would help a follow-up pass

  • Working access to fultonhistory.com’s real search interface and to newspapers.com/GenealogyBank (behind a login) would very likely resolve leads 1 and 2 — the Courier-Post covered both in detail per the forum’s own transcriptions of 1963, 1975, and 1985 clippings, so the primary sources exist and are simply not reachable through this session’s tool access.
  • A correctly-authenticated NamUs API call (proper field names for the UnidentifiedPersons search body) could settle lead 4 relatively quickly by checking for NJ unidentified-female or unidentified-male UP cases with 1994/1996 recovery dates in Burlington/Atlantic County.
  • CourtListener is unlikely to ever help with leads 2 or 3 (trial-level plea/commitment matters), so a county prosecutor’s office public-records request or a state archives newspaper microfilm visit would be the realistic next step for those two specifically.
