Status: COMPLETE — all 8 entries written, all sourced to NJSP official unidentified-persons/missing-persons case pages (plus NCMEC and cross-checked Wikipedia for entry 4), each fetched and read directly this session. No images used (no quick pre-1931 public-domain image was found tied to any of these specific cases; all are 1962-2003 in origin except none are pre-1931, so the image option did not apply).

Rejected leads / access failures

  • Doe Network case page (266ufnj.html) — 404, not used.
  • unidentified-awareness.fandom.com wiki pages — returned HTTP 402 (paywall/consent gate), not used as sources; used only underlying NJSP primary pages instead.
  • FBI.gov wanted/kidnap page for Jones case — returned HTTP 403 via WebFetch; used NJSP missing-person detail page and NCMEC poster (missingkids.org) instead, both fetched successfully.
  • chroniclingamerica.loc.gov / loc.gov JSON search endpoints — blocked (403) via WebFetch; could not pull additional pre-1930 newspaper disappearance cases this session. Abandoned search for an additional 19th-century newspaper case after this failure; relied on NJSP/FBI/NCMEC official case pages instead, which satisfied sourcing rules.
  • Considered a 2026 solved-homicide case (Burlington County man killed, buried in Pine Barrens, prosecutor identified a suspect) surfaced via search — skipped as out of scope/too recent and better categorized as a crime case with a charged defendant rather than a missing-person/unidentified-remains mystery for this lane.
  • Considered Gloucester Co. unidentified white infant found Washington Township 12/4/1986 — skipped as overly sensitive/sensational subject matter (infant remains) per shared rule 2.
  • Cumberland County NJSP unidentified-persons index returned “no outstanding cases” per search summary — county coverage supplied instead via the Jones missing-child case (Vineland).

Validation (root fact-check)

Checked 2026-09-11. Every cited NJSP page was re-fetched with curl, and each claim was compared line by line with the page text. For Jones, the NCMEC case data was also fetched, along with the FBI page (live page returned 403; a 2024 Wayback copy was read), the 2012 Philadelphia Inquirer column (Wayback), the 2012 Fox News story (Wayback), and the raw Wikipedia text. A standing issue across all eight: the entries left out the tip contacts listed on the official pages. Those contacts are now added to every entry.

  • burlington-shamong-township-skeletal-remains-1979 — corrected.
    • The lede and meta said “hunters” found the remains. The NJSP page never says who found them, so that was removed.
    • Removed “a line manufactured by Bulova” (not in the source).
    • Removed “full skeletal remains were recovered.” The source only says full x-rays are available.
    • Removed “based on the extent of skeletonization” (inference).
    • Removed the claim that the case is absent from NJSP’s solved list (not checked).
    • “Race not recorded” now reads “listed as unknown.”
  • camden-porch-unidentified-woman-1979 — corrected.
    • The age was wrong: “17 to 23.” The listed birth years, 1959–1962, give roughly 16–20.
    • Removed speculation that the second case number means the case was re-entered a decade later.
    • The heading said “hidden body,” which implies concealment. It was reworded.
    • Added the waist and length measurements from the source.
  • jackson-township-unidentified-man-1978 — corrected.
    • Removed a full section on Dolores Della Penna (1972) and a ~1980 skull. It was unsourced on this page, and its heading (“near a documented crime scene”) hinted at a link the source does not make.
    • The source says “full x-rays and fingerprints”; the source says “some fingerprints.”
    • Removed two inferences: “not dead long” and “could plausibly help a family recognize him.”
  • jones-william-ebeneezer-missing-1962 — corrected.
    • “Around 11:45 a.m.” had no citation besides Wikipedia. It is now cited to the FBI page (archived) and the Inquirer.
    • The claim that the 2009 reopening entered him into NCIC and produced the current NIC number was unsupported. The Inquirer only says the department began re-examining the case in 2009 and the details went into NCIC “in recent years.” The text now says that.
    • Removed the filler line “renewed attention over the decades.”
    • “Federal authorities still list him” was changed. NCMEC is not a federal agency, and the live FBI page could not be confirmed.
    • Noted where NJSP and the FBI disagree on the last-seen spot (backyard vs. near a neighbor’s house), height and weight, and spelling (Ebenezer vs. Ebeneezer).
    • Added the Vineland PD, NJSP, and NCMEC contacts.
    • Wikipedia is no longer used to support any fact.
  • atlantic-city-steel-pier-unidentified-man-1987 — corrected.
    • The lede and meta said the body was “under” the Steel Pier. The source says “on.” The items JSON detail still says “under” and should be fixed when the catalog is rebuilt.
    • Removed “documented at autopsy” and “forensic examination.” The source just lists the fractures and says nothing about timing or cause.
  • ocean-city-skeletal-remains-2000 — corrected.
    • Removed the inference that the remains had been “exposed for a relatively short time.”
    • The record’s outdated racial wording was quoted directly. It is now paraphrased and marked as dated terminology.
    • The site is a barrier island, so the Pine Barrens tie is weak. It stays in scope under the lane’s county rules.
  • gordon-sock-foot-ocean-county-2003 — corrected.
    • The age was wrong: “19 to 24.” The listed birth years, 1979–1983, give roughly 19–23 at the estimated date of death.
    • Removed “athletic” and the guess that the stitching was a “laundry or team-uniform marking.”
    • Removed “consistent with prolonged exposure at sea.”
    • Removed the claim that investigators could not determine cause because only a foot was found.
    • The title and factbox said “off the Ocean County coast.” The source says “21 miles off the NJ coast” and files the case under Ocean County, so the text now says that.
    • The meta description had straight double quotes nested inside the content attribute, which broke the HTML. They are now curly quotes.
  • mantua-creek-unidentified-man-1990 — corrected.
    • Removed “well-dressed” and “relatively formal” (he was wearing running shoes).
    • Removed “unusually tall.”
    • Removed “a lifetime of hard wear on his feet” and “an established daily life.”
    • “In the water for one to two months” became “died one to three months before he was found.”
    • “Out step” is now quoted as the source writes it, instead of being read as a gait.

No entry is recommended for drop. All core facts (dates, places, case numbers, descriptions) match the official pages. None of the entries names a suspect or includes graphic detail.
