Round Seven — Substantive Updates to Existing Case Entries (2026-09-11)
Round Seven — Substantive Updates to Existing Case Entries (2026-09-11)
Lane F expanded existing entries on missing, unidentified and historical death-inquiry cases with follow-up reporting, official records and corrections. Final count: 9 updated entries.
This file was consolidated at the end of the session. Several lane-F passes worked the same pool at once: this writer, a forked or resumed writer, and a coordinating pass. One early write of this file overwrote an earlier log section. Per-entry notes from all passes, including 2026-09-11-round-seven-expansions-cases-notes-other.md, are merged below, with duplicate sections folded together and the writer credited in each heading.
Updated entries (9)
1. ogden-joshua-1879.html (other writer; source checked again by this writer)
- Added: Find a Grave memorial 162154944 for a Joshua Ogden: born May 22, 1815, in England; died Feb. 16, 1879, at age 63, in Chester, Delaware County, Pa.; buried Chester Rural Cemetery, Sec. A, Lot 69, Grave 4. It lists his wife, Margaret Farraday Ogden, and children. The death date falls the day before the clipping’s Feb. 17 dateline, and “Upland” and “North Ward” are Chester-area place names, so this is presented as a probable match. The entry notes that the case appears to belong to Chester, Pa., not the Pine Barrens.
- Sources inspected: Find a Grave 162154944. The other writer read it in full; this writer re-fetched it with curl late in the session and confirmed the birth date, death date and place, and burial.
- Rejected / not found: No inquest verdict was located. loc.gov searches for “Ogden inquest Ship Creek” and variants returned Cloudflare challenges, and WebSearch found nothing. One untested lead: Chester County, Pa., Archives holds coroner’s records for 1720–1916 (chesco.org), but Ship Creek and Upland are in Delaware County.
2. cohen.html (other writer)
- Added: NamUs case record #MP28525: created May 1, 2015; last modified March 6, 2025; unresolved. It gives the clothing he was last seen in and lists the investigating agency as NJSP Troop C Bordentown Station, where older reports said Red Lion Station (flagged). Also a Dec. 2015 State Police appeal to hunters (PhillyVoice) and a Charley Project cross-reference. The subject may be living, so only official or reputable sources are used and no suspects are named.
- Sources inspected: NamUs API JSON for case 28525; PhillyVoice; Charley Project.
- Rejected: The HTML render of the namus.gov page was an empty JS template, so the API was used instead.
3. thackara-everett-1941-medford-drown.html (other writer)
- Added: Find a Grave memorial 75245177 (Park View Cemetery, Medford). It gives his parents, Walter S. and Almira W. Cline Thackara; a sister, Sarah Florence; birth on Nov. 1, 1887 (the marker reads 1888); work as a farm laborer; and a death date of Oct. 29, 1941, the day he disappeared. Presented as a probable match. The ages in both clippings are consistent with it.
- Rejected / access: A follow-up on the 1939 Vincentown careless-driving case was not obtained because loc.gov returned 429s. The BCLS New Jersey Mirror index has no “Thackara” hits for 1939–42 and none for “Medford” in 1941 (this writer’s check).
4. nehrwein-atsion-woman-anna-maria-nehrwein-1887.html (other writer; carried over from an interrupted earlier run)
- Added: Four clippings scanned by the Tabernacle Historical Society (“Tales of Murder and Mayhem”): Camden Daily Telegram, July 23, 1887 (two briefs); The Morning Post, Aug. 10, 1887; Camden Courier-Post, Aug. 12, 1887. They give an earlier discovery notice, a discovery date of July 21, 1887, identification through cards in her valise, and the coroner’s jury verdict (death from exposure or an unknown cause). They also report that the prosecutor closed the matter.
- Correction: The discovery site was Hampton Gate on the New Jersey Southern Railroad, not Atsion itself; the original framing is kept for continuity.
- Sources inspected: the images on the Tabernacle Historical Society page, downloaded and read directly.
- Rejected: Unrelated 1887 “Thomas Foster” clippings on the same page. The BCLS Mirror index had no “Nehrwein” hits for 1887–88 (this writer’s check).
5. miller-woodburn-murderer-1942.html (other writer)
- Added: Find a Grave 125029851 (Jean Virginia Bush, Pemberton Baptist Cemetery), sourced to a Mount Holly Herald index. Her birth date of Oct. 1, 1928 corrects her age at death from 14 to 13. The memorial also cites two Herald items not previously in the entry: Nov. 13, 1942, sec. 1, p. 6, col. 1, on Miller being jailed on the murder charge, and Dec. 11, 1942, sec. 1, p. 1, col. 8, on the continuing search after his escape. Separately, Find a Grave 114502000 lists a Woodburn “Wood” Miller (1920–1971), buried in Quindaro Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan., whose listed sibling Helen Chard makes him probably the same man. Its parents’ names (Harry Miller and Elsie Jess) conflict with the clipping’s “William Miller, 65”; flagged.
- Rejected: CourtListener searches for State v. Miller in NJ, 1942–46, returned no NJ results. The BCLS Mirror index had no “Woodburn” or “Jean Bush” hits for 1942–47 (this writer’s check). The trial outcome is still undocumented.
6. bryan-howard-g-1936-dix.html (this writer: Mirror; other writer: Find a Grave)
- Added (this writer): New Jersey Mirror, July 1, 1936, p. 1, col. 1, “Find Dead Soldier During Search for Another Absentee” (BCLS index accession 19776, full transcription). New details:
- He was found June 30 in an orchard by Pvt. Charles J. Benjamin (Co. A, 16th Inf.) and his visitor Charles Roselis of Baltimore.
- A partly filled liquor bottle lay beside the body.
- The name is printed “Howard P. Bryan,” age 43, and the identification is called tentative.
- The autopsy was done at Grobler’s in Pemberton and found no cause of death.
- Dr. Conroy believed he had treated the same man in France.
- He left camp June 1 to celebrate re-enlisting, carrying $23 in pay plus a $60 clothing-allowance balance; no money was found on the body.
- He was eligible for a bonus of nearly $1,000.
- Two soldiers saw him near the orchard around midnight with an unknown man.
- Added (other writer): Find a Grave 69962329, “Howard Price Bryan,” born May 1, 1893, in Centreville, Md.; died June 2, 1936, in Burlington County; buried Chesterfield Cemetery; headstone reads “Maryland PVT 16 INF”; father Thomas E. Bryan. Presented as a probable match.
- Flags: The G./P. middle initial, field vs. orchard, June 1 vs. June 2, and “$83 pay and bonus” vs. “$23 pay plus $60 allowance” are all shown rather than resolved. No death certificate or military file was checked.
- Sources inspected: BCLS Mirror index POST searches for “Bryan” (1936), “Roselis” and “Camp Dix” (1936); Find a Grave 69962329 and the name/death-year search that led to it.
- Rejected: Other 1936 “Bryan” hits in the Mirror index are unrelated (a wedding; “Bryan Fort, Jr.” in a Vincentown obituary). Find a Grave records for Howard E. Bryan (203948842) and Howard W. Bryant (41053144) do not match.
7. penley-william-k-missing-1958-found-1959.html (other writer; source checked again by this writer)
- Added: Find a Grave 11793529, William K. Penley Jr.: born May 3, 1919; died Sept. 6, 1958, at age 39; buried Old Whiting Cemetery, Whiting (Manchester Township); a World War II Naval Reserve Seabee (Construction Mechanic 2nd Class). Presented as a probable match to the clipping’s damaged “about 40” and its Manchester Township location. The memorial does not mention a hunter, a search or a cause of death.
- Sources inspected: Find a Grave search (William Penley, died 1958, NJ; two candidates) and memorial 11793529. This writer re-fetched it and confirmed the dates and burial.
- Rejected / access: A Penley search with no death year returned about 20 unrelated Penleys. The BCLS Newspaper Notices Index has no “Penley” hits (this writer’s check). loc.gov was blocked.
8. rego-joe-1937.html (this writer; also logged by another pass)
- Added: New Jersey Mirror, Aug. 25, 1937, p. 1, col. 1, “Gangster Taken for ‘Ride’ in Revenge for N. Y. Murder” (accession 23896), giving these details:
- Fire Warden Joseph C. Holloway of Tabernacle Township found the body on Friday, about 50 feet off Route 39 near Atsion.
- The dead man is identified as Andrew Canzoneri, 33, alias Joe Rego, who had lived about four months on Peach Street in Hammonton and carried an Atlantic County sheriff’s courtesy card in the name Joseph Rego.
- The autopsy by Drs. John S. Conroy and Edward J. Muldoon at Cline’s in Vincentown found two fatal gunshot wounds.
- He was buried in the Vincentown Baptist cemetery. Afterward his brothers Grida and Anthony Canzoneri of New Columbia, Pa., identified him from a photograph and said he had left his wife and five children that January.
- New York police alleged he killed dance-hall manager Albert Rossi on March 22, and he was blamed for two Luzerne County, Pa., shootings on March 26.
- Police believed he was followed from Wyoming, Pa., and killed in revenge.
New Jersey Mirror, Feb. 9, 1938, p. 1, col. 5, “Gangster’s Body Exhumed for Reburial in Penna.” (accession 25508): exhumed and reburied at Summit Hill, Pa., at the request of his widow, Margaret, of Nesquehoning. This item gives the discovery date as Aug. 20, 1937 and the abduction from Hammonton as Aug. 7; it calls the victim Alfred Rossi, killed Aug. 22, 1936, and places the Pennsylvania shooting at a Wilkes-Barre dice game.
Mount Holly Herald, Aug. 27, 1937, p. 1, col. 6, through the BCLS Newspaper Notices Index (staff summary only, under “Canzoneri, Andrew”): it names the finder Edward Holloway, a deputy forest fire warden, and the brothers’ town New Columbus. It gives the death date as Aug. 16, 1937 and reports that state police sought an alleged New York gambler. That man was never shown to be charged, so the entry does not name him.
- CORRECTION: The entry’s earlier OCR-based alias “Andrew J. Mancuso” is not supported. Both Mirror reports and the Herald index record name the man Andrew Canzoneri. The superseded text is kept in the entry with the correction beside it. A Mirror index search for “Mancuso” in 1937 found nothing. Sources for the correction: Mirror index accessions 23896 and 25508, and the BCLS Newspaper Notices Index record for the Mount Holly Herald of Aug. 27, 1937.
- Flags: Friday vs. late Sunday; 50 feet vs. a mile; Albert/March 22 vs. Alfred/Aug. 22, 1936; Joseph C. vs. Edward Holloway; Aug. 16 vs. Aug. 20. All criminal allegations are attributed to police because he was never tried. No quotations are taken from the post-1931 texts beyond headline wording.
- Sources inspected: Mirror index POST searches for “Rego” (1937), “Canzoneri” (all years; 2 hits), “Mancuso” (1937; none) and “Atsion” (1937; weddings only); Notices Index surname search for “Canzoneri”.
- Rejected: 1937 “Rego” hits for MacGregor, Gregorio and Trego (substring matches). Not checked: New York and Pennsylvania court or police records, the Summit Hill burial, and the page images.
9. dunham-jercy-1969-plane-crash.html (other writer; source checked again and wording adjusted by this writer)
- Added: Find a Grave 279561401, Percy H. Dunham (1922 – March 29, 1969, Atlantic County). The burial field reads “Buried or Lost at Sea” and says he piloted a private plane that vanished in the shore area between Atlantic City and Manahawkin, which favors an offshore loss over an inland crash. It names his parents (Percy Glen Dunham, Edith Harrop Dunham), his wife Edwina (1923–1969), his son Brad (1954–1969) and two siblings.
- Edit by this writer: The entry quoted the memorial’s burial note word for word. Because that note is modern, non-public-domain text, this writer paraphrased it and attributed it to the memorial.
- Sources inspected: Find a Grave 279561401 and the Percy Dunham search that led to it; re-fetched by this writer.
- Rejected: No CourtListener search was made for the Toscano settlement, since settlement approvals are rarely published.
Entries examined without a substantive change
- carslake-charles-l-1933.html (withheld to keep the lane at 9). This writer found three county-newspaper notices through the BCLS indexes:
These conflict with the entry’s age of 60. An update was drafted, but it would have been a tenth entry, so the file was restored to its original text. These citations are the first lead for a future pass.
- bender-craig-1940.html (not edited; lead only): BCLS Notices Index record for the New Egypt Press, Dec. 26, 1940, p. 8, col. 7. It calls Craig the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bender of Elizabeth, supporting the December AP version against the July “William Bender of Linden.”
- stiletto-murder-1892.html (two separate passes): loc.gov searches were blocked on every attempt, WebSearch returned nothing relevant and later ran out of budget, and the victim is unnamed, so Find a Grave was not usable. The Mirror index had no “Atsion” or “Hammonton” hits for 1892 that concern the case. The Riverton Weekly News PDFs for Oct. and Nov. 1892 (rivertonhistory.com) were text-searched for Atsion, Hammonton, Italian woman and stiletto, with no hits. A Wilmington Daily Republican hit of Oct. 28, 1892 was a false positive about a liquor-license petition.
- domioni-giuseppe-1938.html: loc.gov searches were blocked on all 9 attempts. Find a Grave had no Domioni or Domiono memorials for 1938; an unrelated Lorenzo Domioni (Australia, 1873, memorial 211196839) was rejected. WebSearch found nothing.
- fulton-minnie-1974.html: CourtListener State v. Hill opinions for NJ, 1974–80, are unrelated (Walter H. Hill, 139 N.J. Super. 548; Robert Hill, 153 N.J. Super. 558; John Henry Hill, 170 N.J. Super. 485 and 166 N.J. Super. 224). Several one-line certification denials have no facts and cannot be tied to this case. The Notices Index has nothing for “Fulton, Minnie” or “Hill, Barry.” loc.gov and Find a Grave were blocked; one Find a Grave “Minnie Fulton” was an unrelated Australian burial. WebSearch found nothing. The accused may be living, so nothing beyond the existing clippings was added.
- woods-katie-1895-murdered.html: loc.gov was blocked. The Mirror index had nothing for “Woods” or “Cinnaminson” in 1895, “John Woods” in 1890–1900, or “murder” in 1895 beyond an unrelated Somerville item. The Notices Index had nothing for Woods (1894–96), Katie Woods or Catharine Woods. Find a Grave’s Cinnaminson results showed no adult Katie Woods who died in 1895 (one was a three-year-old child).
- new-lisbon-diabetic-missing-1954.html: loc.gov was blocked. WebSearch turned up only the later 1975 New Lisbon cases. The boy’s name and the outcome remain unknown.
- tote-pin-man-1928.html, clump-of-woods-man-1956.html, black-man-unidentified-1904-whitings-station.html, knopp-solomon-1872.html, quicklime-body-1935.html, mob-murder-1941.html: No new sources.
- loc.gov was blocked.
- Mirror index: nothing for “Whiting” in 1904 (only an unrelated obituary); “Hutchinson” in 1872 (unrelated); “Knopp” 1870–75; “Broome” or “quicklime” in 1935; “Indian Mills,” “Abrams,” “gangster” or “Stoddard” in early 1941. An 1896 Mirror item about a stranger from Manchester who died near Atsion is a different case.
- Notices Index: “Knopp” only a 1949 marriage.
- The Ocean County Library’s ResCarta archive (NJ Courier and Ocean Emblem, 1852–1922) returned “No query was specified” to scripted POST requests (fields query1_modifier, query1_field=ALL and query1); it needs manual browser searching.
- The coordinating pass also found no relevant BCLS index hits for quicklime, mob murder, New Lisbon, Katie Woods or Knopp.
- wainright-james-1884-bamber.html: The entry already records the case outcome, and the Mirror index had nothing for 1884–85.
Access notes (session-wide)
- loc.gov (Chronicling America): worked briefly via curl with a browser User-Agent, then returned Cloudflare challenges and 429s for the rest of the session under load from parallel lanes. WebFetch to loc.gov returned 403/429.
- Find a Grave: works via curl with a browser User-Agent but rate-limits.
- Worked reliably: the Burlington County Library System’s New Jersey Mirror index (
netscape.bcls.lib.nj.us/newspapers/newjerseymirror/njmirror.phtml, POSTkeywordand date fields, full transcriptions 1818–1947) and the Burlington County Newspaper Notices Index (/newspapers/nni/result.phtml, POSTlname/fnamewithsubmit), which covers the Mount Holly Herald, New Egypt Press and other titles. - Browser extension: claude-in-chrome was not connected.
- WebSearch: the budget was used up by concurrent work late in the session.
Validation (root fact-check)
Root fact-check pass, September 11, 2026. Every newly cited source in this lane was opened independently and read in full. No fabricated citation was found, and no clobbering damage (duplicated sections, contradictory statements, doubled content) was detected in any of the nine entry files. Pre-existing verified content and imported material were preserved in all nine.
Sources re-opened and confirmed
- Find a Grave 162154944 (Joshua Ogden): b. 22 May 1815, England; d. 16 Feb 1879 (aged 63), Chester, Delaware County, Pa.; Chester Rural Cemetery, Sec A Lot 69 Grave 4; wife Margaret Farraday Ogden (1827–1917). Confirmed.
- NamUs API case 28525:
idFormattedMP28525, created 2015-05-01, modified 2025-03-06,caseIsResolvedfalse; clothing “green tshirt / blue jeans / black shoes”; circumstances name the pizzeria and the Red Lion Motel; investigating agency “New Jersey State Police Troop C Bordentown Station”. All confirmed. - Find a Grave 75245177 (Everett Benjamin Thackara): bio confirms parents Walter S. Thackara and Almira Cline, birth in Medford 1 November 1887 with a marker reading 1888, single, farm labourer, “died from drowning in Haines Creek”; death 29 Oct 1941; Park View Cemetery, Medford; sister Sarah Florence Thackara (1893–1966). Confirmed.
- Tabernacle Historical Society, “Tales of Murder and Mayhem”: all four Nehrwein clipping images downloaded and read directly. The Aug. 12 Camden Courier-Post image confirms the headline, the July 21 discovery date, “in the woods at Hampton Gate, on the New Jersey Southern railroad”, the epileptic-fit testimony, the foreman’s remark, the prosecutor’s “thoroughly sifted”, and the verdict verbatim: “We do find that Catharine Nehrwein came to her death from exposure or some other cause unknown to the jury.” The July 23 Camden Daily Telegram and the Aug. 10 Morning Post images confirm the remaining quotations.
- Find a Grave 125029851 (Jean Virginia Bush): b. 1 Oct 1928, d. 31 Aug 1942 (aged 13), Pemberton Baptist Cemetery; the bio is a Mount Holly Herald index record citing Sept. 4, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11, 1942 exactly as the entry states. Confirmed.
- Find a Grave 114502000 (Woodburn “Wood” Miller): b. 13 Mar 1920 NJ, d. 8 Mar 1971 (aged 50), Quindaro Cemetery, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kan.; bio names Harry Miller and Elsie Jess, siblings including Helen Chard, truck driver, Medford Farms, Vincentown. Confirmed.
- BCLS New Jersey Mirror index accession 19776 (July 1, 1936) read in full. Every detail the bryan entry attributes to it is present: Benjamin and Roselis, the orchard and berries, the liquor bottle, “Howard P. Bryan, 43”, Grobler’s, “Conry”/Conroy, the France hospital, the $23 pay plus $60 clothing allowance, the ~$80 and no money found, the near-$1,000 bonus, and the midnight sighting with an unknown man. The article also covers Pvt. Edward F. Graham, 18th Infantry, as stated.
- Find a Grave 69962329 (Howard Price Bryan): b. 1 May 1893 Centreville, Queen Anne’s County, Md.; d. 2 Jun 1936 Burlington County, N.J.; Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville; inscription “Maryland PVT 16 INF”; father Thomas E. Bryan. Confirmed.
- Find a Grave 11793529 (William K. Penley Jr.): b. 3 May 1919, d. 6 Sep 1958 (aged 39), Old Whiting Cemetery, Whiting, Ocean County, N.J. Confirmed. The bio line reads “Virginia CM2 USNR WWll” — the lane log omitted the Virginia element.
- rego correction fully verified. Mirror index accession 23896 (Aug. 25, 1937) and 25508 (Feb. 9, 1938) were both read in full; both name Andrew Canzoneri. A Mirror keyword search for “Mancuso” returns “Your search yielded no results.” The Newspaper Notices Index record under “Canzoneri, Andrew” (Mount Holly Herald, Aug. 27, 1937, p. 1, col. 6) was retrieved and matches the entry’s summary, including the finder Edward Holloway, the spellings New Columbus and Grido, and the Aug. 16, 1937 death date. The correction is sound, and the entry’s title, meta description, lede, status line and factbox are consistent with it.
- Find a Grave 279561401 (Percy H Dunham): b. 1922, d. 29 Mar 1969 (aged 46–47), Atlantic County; burial field “Buried or Lost at Sea. Specifically: pilot of a private airplane that disappeared in the Atlantic City-Manahawkin shore area”; Percy Glen Dunham (1895–1976), Edith Harrop Dunham (1895–1964), Edwina Dunham (1923–1969), Brad Dunham (1954–1969), two siblings. Confirmed.
Corrections applied to entry files
ogden-joshua-1879.html— removed “of an age consistent with the clipping”; the clipping states no age. Replaced with an explicit note that the clipping offers no age, occupation or family detail to test the memorial against.cohen.html— removed the inference that the March 2025 modification date is “evidence that the file was still active … rather than quietly closed”. A modification timestamp is not evidence of investigative activity; the sentence now says so.thackara-everett-1941-medford-drown.html— rewrote the closing sentence of the burial-record section. The previous wording implied the memorial was silent about the case; in fact the memorial itself records a drowning in Haines Creek, which the entry now says, while still labelling the identification an inference.nehrwein-...-1887.html— removed “a day or two before”, which no clipping supports; the Camden Daily Telegram instead says the woman “had been dead about a week”, now quoted. Also replaced the unsourced “Woodland Township area of the pine belt” with “the Burlington County pines”; no source places Hampton Gate in a named township.miller-woodburn-murderer-1942.html— lede now notes that the contemporary reports gave Jean Bush’s age as 14; factbox “Burial” relabelled “Burial (Jean Bush)” so the row cannot be read as Miller’s; softened “very likely the same man” to a probable identification resting on the sibling’s name alone; and the flat assertion that “Miller was not executed and survived the 1942 case by nearly three decades” is now conditional on that identification.bryan-howard-g-1936-dix.html— removed the false conflict over “June 1 or June 2”; the Mirror consistently has him last seen the night of June 1 and missing from June 2. No other change: the Mirror material is accurate throughout.penley-william-k-missing-1958-found-1959.html— substantially rewritten. The Find a Grave record is now labelled unconfirmed in the status line, lede, section heading, body and source note, rather than “probable”. The section now states plainly that surname-plus-initial, approximate age and township are the whole of the overlap; adds the “Virginia CM2 USNR WWII” marker line the lane omitted, which points away from a local man; and flags the tension between a firm September 6, 1958 death date and a case in which remains were not recovered until 1959. Nothing elsewhere in the entry now depends on the identification.rego-joe-1937.html— added an inline pointer in the original “Discovery and identification” paragraph so the superseded “Andrew J. Mancuso” reading is corrected where the reader meets it, not only three sections later. No other change; the Mirror and Herald material is accurate.dunham-jercy-1969-plane-crash.html— reworded the burial-note sentence, which still tracked the modern memorial’s phrasing almost word for word despite the lane’s stated paraphrase.
No entry in this lane fell below the substantive threshold after correction; all nine rows stand.
The detail for penley-william-k-missing-1958-found-1959 in the items file was rewritten,
since the previous wording presented the burial record as establishing an age and a service
record for the entry’s subject.
