Entries and findings

  1. stratford-william-ware-wildman-1922 — NEW. Compared the Philadelphia-datelined “Cave Man Is Riddle,” Sherman County Observer, December 22, 1922, page image 4, with the earlier Camden Courier, November 28, 1922 notice preserved in the Wolverton archive. The former names William Ware, records his denials and lack of resistance, and attributes allegations without a conviction; the latter concerns employment, housing, and care of three children. Chronology is explicit: the local follow-up predates the distant reprint. Sources: https://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn96088415/1922-12-22/ed-1/seq-4.pdf ; https://dvrbs.camdenhistory.com/people/charles-a-wolverton/ . Full Oregon page visually examined; it contains no portrait of Ware. Local transcription reviewed, not an independent original Courier page. Later family and criminal-case outcomes remain unestablished.
  2. sindia-wreck-1901 — UPDATED. Added original Third Circuit 1990 admiralty decision, distinguishing reversal of dismissal from an award of cargo or binding determination of New Jersey’s interest. Court’s correction of the 3,000-yard offshore description is included. https://law.resource.org/pub/us/case/reporter/F2/895/895.F2d.116.html . Opinion read; not an exhaustive subsequent-docket investigation.
  3. wayne-1878 — UPDATED. Original New York Herald, December 8, 1878, page 7 supplies the omitted Henrietta Rosenstein letter dated December 5: she asked whether the detained man could be her missing husband Solomon. Officials’ reply and the newspaper’s hope are not a confirmed identification. Compared West-Jersey Pioneer, December 26, 1878, page 1 reprint lacking this continuation. https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn83030313/1878-12-08/ed-1/?sp=7 ; https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn83032103/1878-12-26/ed-1/?sp=1 . Full Herald scan and OCR examined; newspaper identification outcome remains unknown.
  4. passaic-1887 — UPDATED. New-York Tribune, October 16, 1887, page 9 establishes date, Station Agent Dean, Sheriff McKee and incompatible escape/release explanations. Does not identify this man with the older Wayne report. https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn83030214/1887-10-16/ed-1/?sp=9 . Full scan examined.
  5. jersey-devil-newspaper-week-1909 — UPDATED. Jersey City News, July 29, 1899, page 7, “Jersey Sees a Devil,” credited to the New York Herald, supplies the winged long-tailed image and printed folklore ten years before the famous panic. Birth story, wreck omens and ghost material are narrative traditions, not newly authenticated sightings. https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn87068097/1899-07-29/ed-1/?sp=7 . Complete page and illustration detail visually examined. Period broadened to 1899–1909. Existing 1909 sources remain separately attributed.
  6. leeds-devil-carolina-bird-report-1887 — NEW. Savannah Morning News, October 11, 1887, page 3, credits a New York Sun item datelined Doylestown October 1. The unusual bird report belongs to F. B. Phelps in Mulberry, North Carolina; a Burlington resident used it as a prompt to recount Leeds folklore. Evesham post-Revolution birth variant distinguished from 1735. https://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/lccn/sn86063034/1887-10-11/ed-1/seq-3/ . Full available OCR reviewed. PDF request returned a security HTML page; rejected and removed, no false PDF hosted. No physical animal identification established. Eyebrow corrected to Folklore and media.
  7. elm-berry-pickers-wildman-1896 — NEW. Jersey City News, August 4, 1896, page 2, Hammonton special dispatch. Named Wood household, pursuit by berry pickers near Murphy’s Crossing, clothing and later anonymous turnpike report toward Winslow Junction. https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn87068097/1896-08-04/ed-1/?sp=2 . Complete scan and article examined. No capture, diagnosis or identity established; one dispatch is not several independently verified witnesses.
  8. dover-mellon-house-wildman-1894 — NEW. The Sun, January 7, 1894, page 1, Dover January 6 dispatch. Vacant Mellon house, initial failed search, later pursuit and alleged killing of a dog; explicit hearsay language and lack of names retained. https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn83030272/1894-01-07/ed-1/?sp=1 . Complete scan examined. No identity or later outcome established.
  9. florida-wildman-1881-monmouth-democrat — UPDATED. Wheeling Daily Register, June 18, 1881, page 3, “What Is It,” credited to New York Herald. Longer version switches bread-offerer to Sullivan, names William K. Green, explicitly supplies the conflicting Sussex County location, describes a ragged blanket and initial human interpretation, and claims a hair sample without scientific examination. https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn86092518/1881-06-18/ed-1/?sp=3 . Complete page and continuation examined. Existing imported narrative shortened to keep combined account concise. Florida/Glenmere geographical correction remains, but source’s contradictory county label is now exposed. No original Monmouth issue date recovered.
  10. ghost-of-mary-ann-forge — UPDATED. J. W. Otley and R. Whiteford, Map of Burlington County, Smith & Wistar, Philadelphia, 1849. Directly read Mary Ann, R. Jones, Forge and Saw Mill labels, pond and roads; separates real industrial layout from Beck’s golfing ghost. https://www.loc.gov/item/2012586251/ ; https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3813b.la000440/ . Full map and repository detail visually examined. Unlabeled building symbols cannot establish worker occupancy; Mary Ann’s identity and country-club transactions remain open.
  11. barnsboro-1882 — UPDATED. Exact provenance recovery: Gloucester County Democrat, December 7, 1882, page 3, Barnsboro column matches the previously unidentified crop, including Crane/Parker, farm sales and Somers’s move. https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn87068079/1882-12-07/ed-1/?sp=3 . Full scan visually examined. Tuesday December 5 dates circulation of the rumor, not necessarily the claimed encounter. Newspaper’s pheasant explanation retained. Narrative rewritten to avoid doubling the same short item.

Both visually examined; caption makes region/complete-map distinction.

LOC metadata JSON supplied image endpoints and full-text service; archive-hosted PDFs sometimes returned access denial while image services worked. No archive download was represented as a higher resolution archival master: captions state repository rendering and scale. File signatures checked before hosting.

Extent, unused leads, and source budgets

Batch searches and full-text review narrowed the Barnsboro date across December 1882 issues; December 7 provides the exact match. Hunterdon “harrows” searches did not locate a useful matching passage and were not turned into an update. Jericho/Trenton searches and an 1881 Opdyke Wood / Weehawken brief were held as leads, not published as quota filler. Earlier maritime reservations were released when the user prioritized folklore. Mary Ann’s historical map remains because it materially grounds an existing ghost story.

Each newly summarized underlying document is kept to roughly 200 words or less including its lede; paired newspaper reprints are not treated as independent confirmations. Florida and Barnsboro were shortened rather than accumulating duplicate paraphrases. New documents are distinct from previously used modern source summaries, using the parent’s normalized source index as a reuse check. Original public-domain records are downloadable in full; newly written narrative still uses concise attribution. Existing imported source material is paraphrased, not silently presented as verified observation.
