Round three: five women’s documentary histories
Round three: five women’s documentary histories
Five new entries checked against the 205-entry pre-round catalog. These are wider South Jersey connections, explicitly located rather than presented as central-reserve sites.
- Abigail Goodwin: Read Dickinson’s complete letter transcript (retrieved directly after browser-reader failure) and Salem County’s historical account. Dickinson explicitly estimates the year 1855. A sewing committee is a proposal, not a demonstrated institution. Original manuscript and society minutes remain unchecked.
- Hetty Saunders: Read the county essay and visually inspected its linked manuscript photograph of The Little Wanderer. The poem’s child-rescue scene is not proof of the weather, route or circumstances of Saunders’s escape. Complete edited collection remains unchecked; no archive image copied into site assets.
- Cornelia Hancock: Read the July 8, 1863 letter transcription and the detailed Friends Historical Library finding aid. The latter supplies the Toms River hotel employment and preservation history, explicitly distinguished from inspected manuscripts. Wartime originals and the later Swarthmore collection are not conflated.
- Rebecca Steward: Read chapters II–IV of the 1877 memoir, including January and June 1875 letters. Kept household evidence separate from her son’s devotional selection; original letters not compared.
- Jarena Lee: Read PBS’s substantial transcription from the 1849 narrative and the National Park Service biography. Preserved Lee’s explicit uncertainty about the slaveholder’s conversion; no exact modern route or building identification inferred.
