THIS CAR / ELECTRICAL EVIDENCE

Map the actual alternator wiring.

Use this worksheet to record what is physically connected to the Bosch AL298X on this car. Add one row for each wire or terminal you can see. It does not assume a pin count or that the car still has its original harness.

Correct diagram to seek

The British Leyland AKM 4071/B workshop manual contents, PDF page 8 lists 1975 U.S.A. specification wiring diagrams, topic 86.00.03, and charging-circuit testing, topic 86.01.02. This is a verified pointer, not an inspection of those circuit pages. The original technical publications catalog also lists the 1975 North American Midget manual as AKM3267.

Compare sources before assigning a wire

FITTED CAR · DIRECTRear photo and terminal markings

IMG_6976 identifies the fitted Bosch AL298X, but available photos do not show its rear terminals clearly. A new square-on photo is the missing first observation.

MIDGET · CORRECT YEAR/MARKETAKM 4071/B topic 86.00.03

The manual contents identify this as the 1975 U.S.A. diagram. Obtain the circuit page, then check it against the fitted harness before using its wire colors or connections.

ALTERNATOR · PRODUCTBosch AL298X listing

Bosch specifies a 12 V, 35 A internally regulated unit and plug type 110. The accessible listing does not map the installed terminals on this car.

SPITFIRE · COMPARISON ONLYAmicale Spitfire 1500 circuit drawing, PDF page 2

This is a real, full-car Spitfire 1500 wiring diagram, reproduced in the club’s 2001 bulletin. Its key on PDF page 1 identifies 1 as alternator, 2 as ignition warning lamp, 3 as battery, 4 as ignition/start switch, 6 as starter solenoid, and 7 as starter. The sheet does not state a model year or market for the base diagram; its starred notes identify certain left-hand-drive variations. Use it to understand the circuit layout, not to assign a Bosch terminal or wire color on this Midget.

Record the connector as found

Choose a connection’s “Mark on photo” button, then tap its position in the rear photo. Numbered markers are saved in the JSON; the photo itself stays on this device and must be kept alongside the export.

Saved entries use this browser’s local storage. Export a copy before changing devices. A blank or diagram-based field is not a verified connection.

Before this becomes a repair diagram

Period charging-system bulletin: British Leyland's February 1975 bulletin 75-B-3 warns that reversed battery connections and an incorrectly connected alternator harness can damage the rectifier, and that intermittent charging connections or disconnecting the battery with the engine running can damage the Lucas ACR regulator. It documents the original-period Lucas equipment, not the fitted Bosch AL298X's terminal arrangement. Photograph and trace this car's connections before work; never use a running battery-disconnect test.

  1. Photograph the connector from the rear and close enough to read molded markings. Record the viewing orientation because mirrored views reverse apparent left and right.
  2. Record each wire and terminal separately. Keep a visible wire color distinct from a destination established by tracing.
  3. Inspect the 1975 U.S.A. Midget circuit page, topic 86.00.03, and compare it with this car. Note any harness changes or Bosch adapter instead of forcing a mismatch to fit the diagram.
  4. Add terminal assignments to the CAD only after the connections are documented. Its current connector housing has no electrical terminals.
