Life

Mary Condon was born at Flemingstown on 11 July 1878, the daughter of Patrick Condon and Mary Ryan. Her Irish civil birth entry names her father as “Patrick Condon Flemingstown,” her mother as “Mary Condon formerly Ryan,” and her father’s occupation as “Labourer.” It records the informant as “Mary Condon her mark Mother Flemingstown,” meaning her mother made a mark rather than signing, and says the birth was registered on 24 July 1878 in the Mitchelstown district.

Her parents’ marriage record places their wedding at the Roman Catholic Chapel of Castlelyons on 7 September 1865. It describes Patrick as a 25-year-old bachelor and labourer from Maghna, son of the deceased John Condon, and Mary Ryan as a 22-year-old spinster from Coole, resident with her parents and daughter of James Ryan.

Our family tree identifies the child Mary Condon as a later Mary O’Connor, wife of Patrick O’Connor and mother of Gerard and Mae. No marriage, census, or child’s record in this archive connects the Flemingstown child to that American family, so the later identity must remain a proposal.

How we know this: Strong for Mary Condon’s Irish birth and parentage; weak for her proposed marriage and later identity as Mary O’Connor. [1][2][3][4][5][6]

Historical context

These background articles explain the places, work, and events in this entry.

What we still don't know

  • Whether Mary Condon married Patrick O’Connor
  • Whether she emigrated to the United States
  • Whether Gerard and Mae O’Connor were her children
  • Her later residences and death
  • Find a Patrick O’Connor–Mary Condon marriage and the couple’s U.S. census or children’s civil records naming Mary’s birthplace/parents; until then, “Mary O’Connor” is a proposed later identity, not an established one.
  • [1920 CENSUS] Patrick O'Connor's household in Jersey City Ward 2 contains one wife, Mary, **38 and born in Ireland**, which implies a birth about 1881-2. That fits `mary-condon-1882` better than the 11 July 1878 of `mary-o-connor-1878`. It is one enumerator's age and does not by itself decide whether these two records are one woman or two, but it is the first hard evidence either way.
