It is simply (says the “ Daily News" Paris correspondent) a telephone connected elec- trically with a phonograph, but a far more sensitive phonograph than Edison's ordinary model, There is, of cousse, an electric battery, sulphate of mercury being used, and from one cell to 60 cells, according to the degree of deafness of the person. Professor Dussaud ia the same order of ideas is preparing for the 1900 Exhibition an apparatus which will ‘enable 10,000 people who may be all deaf to follow a lecture HOPE BURNING FATALITY AT WALLOON Meagre particulars are tohand of a sad burning fatality which occurred at Walloon last Thursday (writes the Ipswich corres- vondeat of the “Observer.”) It appears that e1 the day named, Sirah Ellen, the Iittle eight-year-old daughter of Mr Peter McGreevy, of Walloon, was at home with several yeuager children, her parents being awey. Between 5 and 6 o'clock, from what we can gather, she commenced making a fire with the view of preparing tea, Unfortan- ately her dress became ignited, it is believed in some way in connection with a kerosene lamp. At any rate, shortly afterwards some neighbours saw her outside the house with her clothing in flames. They immediately went to her assistance, but by this time her wearing apparel was nearly all consumed, and she was very severly burnt about the legs and lower part of the hody, back, and arms. No time was lost in conveying th® litlle sufferer to the Ipswich Hospital, where, on her arrival about 7 o'clock, the most care- fal attention was given to her injuries, but she never rallied from the shock, and died early en Friday morning. DENGUE FEVER IN THE NORTH. ‘The dengue is (says the Northern Miner) raging with greater intensity than ever, and a doctor qualified to judge asserts that there are now 5,000 cases on Charters Towers, Already, probably half the population have knocked over, and the money loss to the field has heen at least £10,000, The mor* tality has not been heavy, the victims num- four, being all children, but the general suffering has heen great. A very large number of relapses have been noted: One poor fellow, named Me'Grath, lost his life through believing he was suiering from dengue fever, He did not consult a doctor, and patiently awaited the crisis on the fifth night, Ia the morning his room mate found him dead, aud a post mortem showed that death was due to acute pueumonia. The medical men believe that the fever will not abate until cold weather comes in or there in no healthy person ¢o attack. In many cases doctors are refusing to attend nen, having to devote all their time to women and children. MK IT.
